Guilty Pleasure

This is one of my guilty pleasure movies, I have seen it over 10 times and enjoy it every time. It is objectively not a good movie but that’s okay, Scorsese can’t hit it out of the park every time (that’s a baseball metaphor meaning he can’t make a masterpiece film every time).

Silence was not a film made to win any awards and people should realize that. It is one of those films you watch with your buddies, make jokes while eating junk food and having a cold one (that’s another term for beer- as in alcohol).

I can't speak from experience as I haven't seen it.

It looks like a fairly serious historical drama to me, but you make it sound like a wisecracking action movie starring The Rock.

reply

Your impression is correct: it's a historical drama, and it's sensitive, serious, dramatic, gripping, and moving.

In my opinion, it's one of Scorsese's finest films. It's VERY different from a lot of what he does, but I continue to be miffed that it didn't receive an Oscar nomination, nor were its actors even honoured with nominations, and that's BS. Garfield could have gotten a lead nom (although he was nominated for Hacksaw Ridge that year). Neeson, Driver, Kubozuka, and Ogata all (any, at least) could have been worthy of the supporting nomination. The cinematography is beautiful. The whole film is moving and stunning and I give it my highest recommendation - as little as even that means from some message board rando - but for what it's worth...

So, yeah, in short, I don't know whether the OP just has the most radically differing taste possible to my own, or if he's goofing. It kinda sounds like a spoof/trolling post (not a mean kind - it sounds lighthearted to me), but it's impossible to tell, and I'm certain any questioning of it would result in a denial.

If you're doubting, just watch Silence and let the film settle itself.

I don't see how this can be considered a guilty pleasure. It is an excellent film that got great reviews and was nominated for an Oscar for best cinematography.

reply

Being nominated for cinematography doesn't mean anything and doesn't say anything about the quality. If it was an "excellent" film like you claim it would have been nominated for more Oscars

reply

It should have been nominated for more Oscars, but the Academy doesn't always get it right. It got an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 79 on Metacritic with a 7.2 on imdb. Those aren't guilty pleasure type of scores. Showgirls and Plan 9 From Outer Space could be considered guilty pleasures, but not this film. Silence is a thought provoking, well made, beautiful film. It isn't the type of film you would watch with buddies while you get drunk and make jokes.

Look, everyone has different opinions, people have different views and tastes on guilty pleasure movies. No need to take it so serious.

reply

You said it was objectively not good. That has nothing to do with opinions so you clearly take yourself and your opinions quite seriously enough

reply

Clearly a troll, who are you having beers with -- Kierkegaard, Hobbes, Camus and Flannery O'Connor? Your description's pretty much the only way not to watch this movie

reply

lool. Hilarious.

Definitely Hobbes. 🤔

reply

I liked it. Probably too long but a good film.

reply

"Objectively not a good movie". Oh please. Get over yourself.

reply

Unfunny troll post.
