underrated just because it is about Catholicism?

Just my thought. What you have to say about it?

reply

Loved the movie. Also, it was pretty predictable critics will ignore it, considering political environment these days. And before anyone assumes anything, I'm an atheist...

reply

Yes I think that's exactly what it is. I find it odd that last year Spotlight, a movie showing the worst of the Catholic Church, won so many oscars while this movie showing some of the best gets completely shunned. I am not taking anything away from Spotlight as I thought it was great. However, regardless of what you believe, if you have any appreciation for filmmaking whatsoever you should be able to set your own personal beliefs aside for a minute and understand the beauty of this movie Scorsese clearly worked so hard on. There are few movies that portray the theme of faith, not just Christian faith but faith in general, in such a realistic, agonizing yet beautiful way. I appreciate how humble Scorsese, Driver and Garfield have been while promoting this movie as well. I think in time this movie truly will be considered a masterpiece.

reply

Because it isn't considered with the times in contemporary society to make a movie exploring Catholicism. Not that I agree with the view, it's just the world we currently exist in.

reply

Or maybe it's the Western World that currently exists? There is very strong religious faith in other countries and I strongly believe Islam will eventually become the dominant one.

reply

I very much agree with all you've written here, dnevills.

reply

It is a masterpiece, i agree.

reply

Absolute agreement here.

Kappa Key Catholic.

reply

"while this movie showing some of the best" Some of the best of the Catholic church? Are you having a laugh? If you mean it's great to visit a distant land and try to brainwash people into a religion which then exposes those people to persecution and death, well, yeah, Christian missionaries are "the best" at that.

reply

So you just didn't get the premises of this movie or Christianity isn't it?

reply

Agree with you, dnevills. And I'm agnostic. This is a beautiful film about humans; a pity there are so many knee-jerk antis about any film to do with faith.

It is very well known that Hollywood Jews are either Shinto or Buddhist, right?

reply

I watched it just recently and I'm still thinking about it. To be perfectly honest, I loved everything about it; the cinematography, in particular, was simply breathtaking.

reply

Loved it and im agnostic, was well done.

Who has got the time, Im all ready busy doing nothing.

reply

The critics seem fine with the film. It's general audiences that don't seem to like Silence. I kind of understand why. It is long, raw and preachy. But I think these people are missing out. This movie gave a very unusual and unique reaction. I couldn't even put my finger on how I felt but I couldn't stop watching it.

reply

Did you see it at the cinema luke?

Don't eat the whole ones!...Those are for the guests. 🍪

reply

It seems like an older type of film, that modern Western audience may not like, perhaps it should be better promoted in on Western countries who are more open minded about films?

reply

Yes, if the catholics were the bad people in the movie, it would probably win Best Picture like Spotlight...

reply

Aww, boo hoo, those poor persecuted Catholics, you are so so right. 😂

"I don't want no white man lookin' at my Tampax!"

reply

In the movie "Spotlight" the bad people were child rapists. Perhaps you forgot that?

reply

Oh no I remember, the movie was just so bland, I couldn't care less.

reply

The 'bad people' of the movie were many, the rapists, the Church leadership for keeping a lid on it for the sake of it's reputation as well as the apathy of the community where not a small number of people knew but didn't want to believe what was happening ...

reply

Just my thought too! What a shame
