One Oscar nomination... ??? !!! ???

Silence deserves best picture, best director and best original screenplay nominations.

i went to see INCEPTION 5 times... !!!

reply

Lack of noms are probably because of the terrible casting.

Andrew Garflunkle couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.

No kidding. Brilliant film.

"Silence" deserved to win Best Picture, Best Director (Scorsese), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Issei Ogata), Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Sound Design.

That's seven categories it should have won in....

It should certainly have been nominated. It's a masterpiece. I have not seen all the nominees for Best Picture but I have seen three others, and there is just no comparison. Andrew Garfield should have been nominated for best actor for this, too. But, we all know, if it isn't completely anti-Catholic, it doesn't have a chance.

reply

Yeah, definitely should have been nominated for picture, director, and several actors (Garfield, Driver, Neeson, Ogata, and Kubozuka - who reminded me a bit of Mifune) should have been nominated for awards. I haven't seen all the script nominations, but it was a well-adapted work, too.

I think you're right on the anti-Catholic thing, but I'd add in that the movie is just too uncomfortable for either "side". Silence is a beautiful, wonderful film which really digs in to the struggles of its characters and struggles with faith and religion. The "problem" is that it's too good at it. This film never says, "Hey, God is real," so it didn't get the Christian bump that, say, The Passion of the Christ received. Nor does it ever say, "Faith is bogus, Christians are silly," and get the mainstream love from people who are uncomfortable with a Christian theology.

It raises questions, presents truthful stories, and masterfully depicts the clash of ideologies and theologies and, unfortunately, that means that the mass market is too uncomfy to really dig into it.

I believe you've nailed it with that assessment of why it doesn't seem able to garner support from "either side." A pity more people can't just appreciate it for what it is.

reply

I think the real shame is that people aren't going to see a beautiful, truthful, challenging work of art. Rather than engage with a piece of art, they'd rather just have celluloid anesthetic.

reply

You forgot, Oscars are no longer about celebrating sophisticated and touching works of art like Silence, they’re now about awarding whatever film comes closest to being Social Justice propaganda.

That new rule sucks, but Silence would certainly qualify since most of its cast is Japanese. Silence wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, even though they had a spare slot. This is one of the biggest shames the Academy carries, in my opinion. Forget Brokeback Mountain v. Crash, not even nominating Silence was stupid.
