I hated the first Sarkar because it was a horrible ripoff of The Godfather. So can someone tell me if Sarkar Raj is a ripoff as well? I don't want to waste my money. (Who am I kidding? It stars Amitabh, I'll probably wind up seeing it anyway.)

It's not a direct scene for scene remake but there are evident influences from both Godfather 1 and 2. Some of the material from Godfather 2 was already in the original Sarkar so the correlation between the Godfather movies and the Sarkar movies isn't perfect. But to be clear, if you've seen Godfather you'll probably spend most of Sarkar Raj with a sense of deja vu, especially in key dramatic moments.

shareThere are definite references here and there to Godfather 1 and 2, but this one takes its own course. It has a lot of its own though and ends up being a different story. However, don't keep Godfather in mind if you want to watch this, because you'll be disappointed (and I knew you already know that). Watch this as a standalone movie and it comes across as a decent movie, however with too many flaws. But Big B is as strong as ever, and if you wanted him to get quality screen time, you'd be glad!

No. This is a wonderful movie, very nicely done.. a real chess game. Normally I am not an Ash fan, but everyone was really good in this film. Also, the script, shooting, editing.. all very good.

I know it is has been four years since you asked the question and it is too late to answer it. I have seen Godfather 1 and 2. And I also skimmed through Godfather 3 because I couldn't watch it completely and didn't wanna spoil the movie watching experience what first two parts had provided me... But I can tell you one thing, neither Sarkar nor Sarkar Raj are ripped off from Godfather series. Both Sarkar and Sarkar Raj hold their own ground even though they're obviously 'inspired' from Godfather series. IMHO, it is unfair to say Sarkar series is a rip off. "Inspired", Hell YES. In all its true meaning!!
