Ludicrous Plot

I found the plot unconvincing and absurd.
Here you have a captain who takes over a sub and is determined to trace the path it
took back in 1943.
To find out how it was able to survive the 2nd world war and resurface mysteriously
in the present.
Somehow he believes that if he manages to discover the natural forces that allowed
this to happen then it could be used as a weapon against the Soviets in the cold war.
That's stretching it way beyond comprehension.
How is it that he could assume that this would be a way to win the cold war when he
obviously doesn't even know what this is?

Obviously this mision must have been his personal idea or obsession.
If on the other hand the royal navy put him up to it by making this a secret mission
then it still leaves it questionable.
Why would they risk a confrontation with the Soviets by having him take the sub into
Soviet waters?
true they could deny any knowledge about it if the Soviets decided to ask.
But still they would be taking the risk of causing an international incident and risking
the lives of the crew for something that is too vague to comprehend.
