Hollywood stars hit the town for local filming

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- With all the bright lights illuminating the city streets recently, the new slogan welcoming visitors to Saratoga Springs may soon have to read: Health, History, Horses and Hollywood. Dozens of cast and crew members are in the Spa City this month to shoot the independent movie 'Aftermath,' under the direction of local filmmaker Thomas Farone. Among the film's cast in town are actors Anthony Michael Hall, Christopher Penn and Elizabeth Rohm.

'We have about 30 people in the cast and 35 in the crew,' said Sylvia Caminer, one of the film's producers. 'About a third of those are local people.'

Caminer was previously involved in the productions of 'The Deli,' a 1997 film featuring Ice-T, and the 2000 comedy-drama 'Blue Moon' and has worked on two television shows, 'Great Hotels' and 'Passport to Europe.'

The story of 'Aftermath' centers on New York state construction company boss Tom Fiorin and the altercations he has with some of his employees. The company boss is portrayed by Hall -- who was first noticed when he was cast as Chevy Chase's son in the 1983 film, 'National Lampoon's Vacation.' Hall's subsequent work included the popular 1980s' films 'Sixteen Candles' and 'The Breakfast Club' as well as being a cast member of Saturday Night Live.

Hall's career has also included roles in 'Edward Scissorhands' and 'Six Degrees of Separation.' In 2001, he starred as Whitey Ford in Billy Crystal's made-for-TV movie '61*,' and last month, he wrapped up the shooting season as Johnny Smith for the TV series 'The Dead Zone.'

In 'Aftermath,' Penn plays the role of the tough and ill-tempered ex-con Tony Bricker. Penn, who is the brother of actor Sean and musician Michael, is a veteran of the films 'Rumble Fish,' 'Footloose,' 'Reservoir Dogs' and 'Mulholland Falls.'

Rebecca is the beautiful, strong-willed and pregnant fiancée of the boss, played by Rohm, previously known for her role as Assistant District Attorney Serena Southerlyn in TV's 'Law & Order.'

The cast also includes Frank Whaley, veteran actor of the movies 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Swimming with Sharks.'

Shooting for the film will take place today on Caroline Street and continue through the end of November, Caminer said. The film is slated for completion in 2006.

Hollywood comes to Caroline Street
THOMAS DIMOPOULOS , The Saratogian

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Dan Conboy was on his way to work Wednesday morning when he was confronted by a woman in the street who asked him, 'Would you like to be in a movie?' 'The funny thing is, last Sunday there were people in my dining room shooting the film 'The Skeptic.' Now today, this,' said Conboy, who had no idea when he pulled a tan jacket over a blue button-down shirt Wednesday morning that he would be making his film debut a few hours later.

A film called 'Aftermath' will have dozens of cast and crew members at work in locations throughout Saratoga County for the better part of the next four weeks. On Wednesday morning, the lights, cameras and heavy cables were running up the hill on Caroline Street and focused on the exterior of the Saratoga City Tavern, where a man called 'Johnny Props' was dropping leaves from the tavern's second-floor window and watching them lazily fall around actor Anthony Michael Hall, who was being filmed in action on the sidewalk below.

'Scene apple 37. Take two,' announced one of the crew members. That was followed by the repetitive mantra that carried through the daylong shoot: 'Rolling. Action. Cut. Check the gate. Rolling. Action. Cut.'

Filmmaking is a hurry up-and-wait kind of business, and a patient diligence is paid to each scene.

Between shots, Hall talked about his enthusiasm for the project and his particular role since he first learned of it while filming his television series, 'The Dead Zone.'

'The heroic character is like one from the early Scorsese films, and this is being filmed in 16 mm, the way Stanley Kubrick used to make his movies,' Hall said.

'I'm a great fan of the 1970s films and the Tarantino films, and for this, they pulled in Chris Penn and Frank Whaley,' Hall said of his 'Aftermath' costars, who are veterans of the Quentin Tarantino films 'Reservoir Dogs' and 'Pulp Fiction,' respectively.

The film's cast includes Elizabeth Rohm, known for her work on 'Law & Order,' Federico Castelluccio, who portrayed Furio on 'The Sopranos,' and Brooklyn-born actor and producer Tony Danza, who will be in the Spa City later this month to play his role as a gun-dealing, bad guy named King.

Hall plays the role of fictional New York state construction company boss Tom Fiorini. Thomas Farone, a real-life local construction company boss, is the film's director.

'Tom's a film fanatic. He's a gifted guy who really takes command on the set,' Hall said.

Approximately one-third of the dozens of cast and crew members involved in the film were hired locally. Location manager Ray Simboli, a veteran of regionally shot movies 'Billy Bathgate' and 'The Age of Innocence,' helped scout locations for the film.

Around 125 nights in area hotel rooms have been rented in addition to the hiring of local caterers and the rental of vehicles and equipment. Crew members have also been frequenting area shops and restaurants, said Jennifer Joseph Perry of the Saratoga County Film Commission.

'The economic impact is going to be fairly sizeable,' she said.

'Aftermath' will continue shooting through the end of November at county locations from Lake Desolation to Ballston Spa.

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The autumn leaves that drifted through the air and fell on Caroline Street around movie actor Anthony Michael Hall on Wednesday morning were not an act of nature.

Crew members on the movie "Aftermath" were dropping them from the second-floor window of City Tavern.

"You see that stuff in the movies and it looks very natural, but generally it's not done by accident," said Ray Simboli, location manager for the independent film, which is being shot here through the end of November.

"Aftermath" features Hall, who starred in the 1980s teen movie, "The Breakfast Club," as well as Chris Penn, who is Sean Penn's brother and who appeared in films such as "Reservoir Dogs" and "Starsky and Hutch. Also in the cast are Elizabeth Rohm, who was recently in "Miss Congeniality 2," Jamie Harrold, who appeared in "The Score" and "The Sum of All Fears," and Frank Whaley, whose credits include "Pulp Fiction."

Area resident and local builder Thomas Farone is the film's writer and director.

It is a dramatic thriller in which Hall plays the boss of a successful construction company. According to a synopsis released by the production firm, things get interesting when two of his employees get into an altercation while vying for a top spot in the company, and one of them subsequently disappears.

It is one of two movies being filmed in Saratoga Springs right now. The other is "The Skeptic," also a thriller.

"It's a nice break from filming in New York City," said Sylvia Caminer, a producer working on "Aftermath." "People seem to be a lot more accommodating. Traffic is not so bad, and it's real pretty."

Caroline Street was closed for a time on Wednesday, as crews filmed outside of City Tavern. They were also scheduled to shoot a scene inside the bar with Hall and Penn, according to Caminer.

Simboli said Wednesday was one of the few days they would be closing down a street to film. He said they will be working in and around the Saratoga area, including at the park police headquarters at the Lincoln Bath building in Saratoga Spa State Park, an office at Saratoga Race Course, various homes and Ballston Spa.

The film is scheduled to be complete in 2006. Caminer said the goal was to have the film picked up by a distribution company.

Producers for "The Skeptic" said they also hope the film will attract enough attention for a wider release.

Saratoga County Film Commissioner Jennifer Joseph Perry said having films shot in Saratoga Springs is good for its economy and its image. She helped both movie crews find locations, lodging and equipment.

"We're very fortunate that we have such a film-friendly community that's used to having film crews here and likes to help out," said Joseph, who is vice president of community development with the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce.

According to Perry, about a third of the 65-member cast and crew for "Aftermath" are local residents.
