So what became of the bums in the park?

It looked toward the end like he was coming by to give them money or something, and he saw that the park had been sold and the camp was gone.

Anyone know whatever became of those people? Did he end up finding his friends again and helping them out, or did he lose track of them? Anyone know the real story?
