Who read the manga....

I didn't read it, so I'd like to know how different this is from the manga... And how is the ending in it?

It's significantly different, in that the manga unfolds more slowly, and in very different ways. For instance, the Sakurako arc is completely redone. The basic premise is the same in that she had extensive plastic surgery to make herself more beautiful so that Domyouji would fall in love with her then she could dump him. But no kidnapping Makino and getting thugs to beat up Domyouji.

The Shizuka subplot is very different, too. She's around longer in the manga, and more dramatic events happen around her. The manga gives a better idea of why Rui loves her so--and her attraction to him. Also, Shizuka's announcement of her return to France, and her reasons for it, is much more dramatic in the manga. It's clearer that she's doing something that young women of her position don't normally do.

But the biggest difference, with this first season, is that the way Makino and Rui get together in the manga is dramatically different. It's more emotionally compelling, and has far more serious consequences.

This isn't to say that the live-action series is bad--it's not. In many ways, it condenses the story into a tighter narrative that has its own appeal. For a better frame-by-frame version events through most of the Shigeru storyline, the anime series is very faithful to the manga, save for the TOJ competition and what happens after Domyouji breaks it off with Shigeru.

As for the manga ending, it hasn't been released here yet, but I've seen some data on it. Apparently, Domyouji's father dies, and Tsukasa goes to New York to take over the business. His relationship with Makino is sort of left...hanging. I understand Kamio Yoko did write a brief update, but I've been unable to find that, so I don't know what happened in it.

But don't take my word for it. The manga is readily available at most of the major bookstores. If you love this series and its characters, it's worth the investment of time and money to get the whole thing.

To add on to what l4d said about the ending, basically Domyouji asks Makino to join him in New York. Makino says she will, but at the last moment decides to stay in Japan and finish her schooling. She tells Domyouji to return when he's become a really good man, and she'll make him happy.

"Bye, Harry!" said Hermione, and she [...] kissed him on the cheek.
