Why is this called a horror movie?

I think Scooby Doo is scarier.

Old women praying all the time, long conversations on what can be explained and what cannot, family feuds, scenes of a village that seems to have only one street...and only two shots that can be considered scary.

As most people voting this movie are Portuguese, the ratings are not realistic.

If you are looking for drama, it's ok, if you are looking for horror, avoid this.

I guess you think Wes Craven makes horror films. This is genuine, old fashioned European horror. Not a stupid special effects movie; Wes Craven and his ilk don't make horror, they make slashers.

When you get past puberty you might start enjoying movies like this which are for a mature audience.

Maybe the reason so many of the writers here are Portuguese is because the film is Portuguese stupid.

Lastly, the fact you can even compare this to Scooby Doo pretty much paints your age and maturity very clearly; only little boys go to watch Scooby Doo.

Amarec, your comments make no sense. We are talking about a bad horror movie here,
not Manoel de Oliveira.

Anyway, if the only thing that you can say is "stupid" (two times in five lines), that shows your intellectual level and why you loved this movie.

Boring movie.

I'm an American and I loved it. Exquisite photography, chilling atmosphere, excellent direction and acting. This will be a treat for discriminating viewers, those who truly love cinema and will appreciate something on the level of "The Haunting" (the 1963 original, not the awful remake) and all those deliciously creepy Val Lewton-produced chillers from the 40s, which relied on suggestion and atmosphere to get across. This is an art-house psychological thriller; those who thrive only on Hostel, Saw & Hills Have Eyes will be disappointed, as Coisa Ruim is clearly beyond their grasp.

Well, i dont agree with you but also, dont desagree. First of all it is a film needed to be seen inside the context that Portugal is so small that most of the things we make here have no industry, thus, Portugal cinema tries to compete with itself,...

I Agree with you, it should not be labeled as an horror film, it is a supernatural drama(nothing more)...
The rest its social context that can only be interpreted by the ones who are closer to this kind of Religious and social little groups, i gave it a 4 in 10, im a Portuguese, i recognize that this film is one of the best things we made in the country but still, The film groups are controled by the elites, and so, the Elites are the only ones with power to engage in production.

I still hope Portugal growns up in that aspect, this shouldnt be «The Reference film» for Portuguese people, its expected more.

Yes, it was 4/10 for me too.

Thanks for being impartial.

I agree, don't intend to flame or start a nasty debate but this movie, especially the ending, was very dissapointing.

I'm from Lithuania, and I loved this movie. It is certainly not 4/10, as someone here has said. I live in Portugal now, and I'm renting a part of quite a similar casa portuguesa to that in the film (although not in a small village in the middle of nowhere). So maybe I'm a bit too sentimental about this. Still, in my opinion the film was very well made, the music was fantastic, and the acting was good too. I like the fact that people have different explanations of what exactly happened - in this case (because it's not always true) it's a sign of a good film which requires some thinking. The last shot was perfect to end the film with.

I guess it's called a horror movie because you have horror stories which turn out to be true. For me, the things the younger priest told about how superstitious the villagers are, how they treat girls when they reach puberty, are much more horrible than the ghosts and werewolves. Those things would be enough to base a horror movie on.

It's a horror film, just an understated one for those tired of the lack of subtly from teen-oriented Hollywood horror.

Inside horror movies there's subgenres, Slashers and Supernatural being 2 of them.

I liked this movie very much, but i understand that you have to be a little familiar with portuguese village superstitions to trully enjoy it.

Don't dream it: be it!

This is another kind of horror. You missed the point.
