I feel sick!

How can it be of any interest watching two people using each other for their own selfish ends? An old man, so full of him self and past fame, that he believes a young woman could actually fall for him. And this stupid young woman impressed by his fame and desperate for expensive gifts.

I felt sick watching this film. The only good thing about it was the music. And indeed, the good acting.

I have to disagree about the music; it stuck in my head until I got the CD, Like a Star, by Corinne Bailey Rae and it wasn't easy to find.

I live in a large US city and after calling every music outlet I could find in the phone book and online, finally ordered it from a mega-book retailer I hate to use. It seems locally owned music shops are the latest in a long list of pleasurable shopping experience to fall victim to mega retailers and online giants, going the way of locally owned toy stores and real book stores, sigh.

To the OP, the film whizzed well over your head at the speed of light, if that's all you saw. I feel sorry for you and sad for the rest of us that your immature unschooled tastes dictate the cultural level of films being made today - at least in the US where movies must = $$$$ and CGI's replace plot, acting and other real production values.

The two charactors were fascinated by and genuinely fond of one another. Peter O'Toole sold the material beautifully without seeming predatorial or de-evolving into a reprobate. A very well directed and well written charmer.

yea well if this was real life if an old man was trying to touch a teenage girl he would be in jail by now. so how can it be ok in a movie?

reply

It's ok because she's over 18 and not exactly pure...

SPOILERS:

I really liked how it seemed like it started out not pure in ideals. He was horny no matter what she would have looked or acted like and wanted her to be around since he was bored and knew he was about to die. She loved the attention and it's just like he said: "It's hard, but I just act nice to her." She was desperate for someone to actually treat her like a goddess as you can see from her crappy boyfriend and the story she told about the guy who was so nice... until she got pregnant.

But something important and meaningful came out of this seemingly petty relationship, and I think that's the beauty of the film. His life was better and emotionally rich at his death and she seemed to have learned something about love. This is a an especially believable ending since they both had so much in common with their love of any type of attention and self-destructive behavior.

Great film, 5/5 stars.

Well put, RoButt. Too many people assume either (1) it's a disgusting relationship, or (2) it's a purely innocent relationship. Both interpretations are missing the point.

The relationship starts out disgusting, based on their mutual selfishness. A dirty old man is horny for a girl who, herself, is only after attention and gifts. In that respect I agree with the people who say that Maurice is creepy (and the girl is a golddigger).

But right around the time when her boyfriend attacks Maurice, they each undergo a significant transformation. After that episode, they are both changed, and the relationship no longer revolves around lust or material things. The relationship becomes pure & chaste. It's a very interesting twist on an old theme, and I thought it was very well done.

I think it takes a good and honest mind to see things this way. :)

I feel sad about people like the OP who obviously missed the point of the movie by a thousand mile.
'Venus' is not about selfishness but about comprehension, about facing the inevitability of death with dignity. It's about love: uninterested love. Selfish? Pffft!
The OP saw a different movie I guess. Either that or he/she should stick to movies like Transformers or G.I. Joe.
