I am a little confused. The clothing, decor and some of the vehicles make it look like it takes place in the early 70's. The camera they use to film the show looks old. There's also a lot of marijuana use. At the same time they're making jokes about Mario and you can see modern SUVs in the background.

Ever seen retro clothing? It seems like it's usually a staple in Happy Madison movies.
The equiptment and such is due to the fact that they're using dated equiptment from when his dad had the show decades back.
I was a little confused too but like you said there were too many modern things giving it away. Basically any time they were in the TV office (with that executive guy), the dentist office, some of the other vehicles, and most of all the widescreen TV seen at one point give it away as being set in 2008.

Seriously? It's pretty obvious this is set in modern times... like, honestly, there was nothing about this movie that made me think otherwise. literally nothing.
