I'm in the army and it is not standard procedure to leave a checkpoint to follow a suspicious vehicle. I have served 2 tours in Iraq. We have something called QRF(Quick Reaction Force)and they would have followed the vehicle or they would have sent other soldiers. You never leave a guard post that is general order no 1 every soldier knows that. The entire movie was not a balanced portrayal of the soldiers or the stop loss policy. Your screen name is not accurate you obviously don't know it all.

If I remember corectly, radio chatter before ´drive-by taxi scene´ indicates that QRF are tasked on a another mission. And I think that Ryan-Philippe´s character knows that it wasn´t right call to follow that taxi. Especially after 2 of his guys were KIA and one is wounded.

I know plenty of idiot veterans who survived by having far better men (And women, especially women in some cases, as it takes a very specific kind of woman to handle the type of *beep* they deal with. Women Soldiers=The toughest, I Say this as a man)

haha, yeah...not looking so smart thinking they were Marines when they say Army at least 100 times throughout the movie.

Its not standard operating procedure to lead your men into an ambush. However it is standard operating procedure to kill the bad guys. Many cities in Iraq have an abundant amount of those highrise buildings you speak of. So every time some insurgents run into a highrise area our Soldiers and Marines are supposed to just stop?

...in 999 case on 1000 you have guidelines, instructions, orders, and thx to Sun Tzu, the author all generals are forced to read at war school.
And you have that 1 on 1000, when on a a bad reflex, a dirty habit, on unmanageable situation and something unusual you do the wrong thing and fubar start.

That is why training is important, repeat scenarios over and over again, until you done the right thing at the right time, do not let the surprise win, ...a good soldier is an experienced soldier.
A good soldier is someone who see the mistake you are on the way to do before you.
