Does Jeannie deserve any sympathy (spoilers)?

Watching the Tommy subplot slowly unfold, I'm struggling to find any sympathy for his wife Jeannie. Given that we don't see a lot of them together, we don't have any definites about their relationship. So here is what we do see in the film.

* When Tommy arrives home, they are able to sit together and seem to be on decent terms - until Tommy flips out at another guy for hitting on her.
* Jeannie throws Tommy out after this incident.
* She's slapped him with a restraining order a few days later.
* Not at one point does she appear to talk to him or comfort him at all after he gets discharged.

What I gather from the relationship is that there is a kid who is clearly shell shocked and traumatised by his experiences in Iraq. His wife responds to this by punishing him, and awfully quickly at that. She doesn't appear to help him or act as emotional support for his drinking problem - and this is after she's already promised in vows to love and cherish him. As the movie doesn't develop their relationship or let us know what their home life was like, Jeannie comes across to me as someone who just didn't want to deal with her husband's problems and went for the 'out of sight, out of mind' approach. A human reaction of course, but one that definitely contributed to Tommy's eventual suicide. This is in stark contrast to Michelle, who did her best to help Brandon and Steve without putting up with their behaviour.

To me, the look on her face at the funeral says that she knows that she is partially responsible.
