Did he die, or did Jigsaw save him? I kinda didn't get that.

Originally, Amanda kills Matthews by stabbing him in the neck. Her near death experience with him is what caused her to turn into a serial killer.

I wish they had stuck to this instead of using Matthews as a sequel bait to give a lame death in Part IV.

I agree with you on this. If they didn't use him as bait, it would've meant that there is at least one Jigsaw survivor, apart from Dr. Gordon. His death at the end of 4 was entirely meaningless. A *beep* ending to a *beep* movie.

This. I really did hate that death scene at the end of Part IV but it wrapped his story up, I guess.

There are three versions of the movie. The theatrical cut, unrated, and the directors cut. I'm pretty sure he died in the theatrical cut.
