Beautiful Film

I have seldom seen a film that moved me as much as this one. It is truly a cinematic masterpiece.

If a friend had not called me and insisted that I watch it, I would have never seen it and the loss would have been mine.

Beautiful performances, direction, writing, etc.

See it!

saw an old guy today at starbux who reminded me of the plummer character a lot.

i see people like that around quite frequently, in fact. the world we are in sucks in the sense that it has abandoned its old, and also ruined the sense of family people once enjoyed more commonly. (not completely, nothing's perfect. but certainly to a way higher degree 30 40 years ago than we do now)

many live with no family whatsoever. makes you wonder how people cope, especially in old age. and it's coming, for all of us. thing is, who will be there around you? i think that the isolation illustrated by this movie will be far far far more commonfelt in a couple decades than now, even, due to the rampant selfcenteredness everyone holds dear. the ME ME ME generations are not abating, at all. it's just a mess, and gonna get worse. we all reap what we sow, to be sure

i think most people don't even speak to these older folks, to offer a kind word, a smile, a listening ear. it's a shame our society is going the way it's going

I saw this recently when it was televised. I saw Christopher Plummer a few years ago in The Tempest, in Stratford, Ontario, and was interested to see a recent movie performance. He was great on stage, but his movements were slow and he seemed to forget his lines and have to be prompted repeatedly. Not that it spoiled his performance, but one interesting part of seeing him in a film at the same age was seeing him act without the continuous physical demands of a stage performance.
I can't go so far as to call the film a masterpiece. It definitely had its weaknesses, including a few clichés, some choppy and confusing flashbacks, and what I found to be too much sentimentality. Overall, though, it was enjoyable. Plummer is certainly the best part of the film, but the cast was good even when the script became a little mawkish. I especially loved M. Emmett Walsh as Mickey, and the kid playing Cameron was not bad.
