Loved it - hated it?

Seems like no one is ambivalent about this movie. Half the peeps gave it a 10 - the other half a 1. Guys overwhelming liked - women overwhelmingly hated it. So I guess it isn't a date/chick flick LOL. Since I'm a guy I'll be watching it.

Comedies I love...
Anything with Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey or any of the Monty Python cast.

Comedies I hate...
Anything with Hugh Grant

Ok now that I've had a chance to see it I can write an honest opinion.

Before the movie started I had doubts about the timeliness. Because of the "dot gone" bust I was concerned I was about to see a movie that was a little anachonistic. Five minutes into the movie and I was no longer worried - I was laughing too hard. Beau Bridges and Mathew Botuchis' performances are ok, but the girls (Rosanna Arquette, Baelyn Neff and Shiri Appleby) steal the show. Rosanna plays the mom and she does a great job as the sex/daytrading addicted counter to Bridges "toilet bowl" salesman. Ms. Neff is great in the role of "daddy's little princess" providing the foil to Mathew's "Colby". But the best had to be Shiri Appleby as "Randi Sommers". Ms. Appleby, always understated and extremely watchable, takes what could have been a throwaway role and works it until the closing scene when everyone in the theater clapped.

All in all, I really liked the film. I don't recommend it for "date night" - it is definitely a "guy film" but us guys need one of those every now and then.

Joe does a nice job of saying the same thing that I would have said. We went to the second screening. After reading the reviews of the first screening, which are not great, I have to think that there has been some editing done. The film was very funny, at least to a guy. I was told by one of the hosts that it was the first time she had seen an audience clap at the end of a screening.

I admit to being an unabashed Shiri fan an will watch anything she's in, but just the same I think it's a very funny film.
I mean, it's a comedy about a totally disfunctional family that drives them to the breaking point
Arquette and Bridges played off each other well and Neff and Botuchis do the same.
I would have liked this had Shiri Appleby noy been Botuchis' girlfriend.
It made us laugh at the ridiculous things we do and that is what comedy is supposed to do.

I'd give it a solid 8

For every guy who had to sit through "Waiting To Exhale", this is your chance for revenge!

It is definitely a guy's movie because the women aren't exactly portrayed in the best light, even though the female actresses do a much better job in the movie.

Unfortunately, I didn't laugh once during the entire movie. The slapstick moments were quite painful, the "porn" scenes were so over-the-top cheesy that they could have been funny if it weren't for the fact porn movies themselves are funny in their own right for that reason. A cheesy parody for a cheesy film genre doesn't really work.

Shiri Appleby was indeed severely undercast.

a good idea....if the movie had been made 10 years ago

too much pop culture name dropping

and the whole, "cute girl who isnt cute" thing has been sooooo overdone...really, does anyone buy shirri not being cute??

and the movie borrowed from sooo many others...all of which were superior, including a movie that i hated, "the truman show".

its too bad too, they got a good cast together, but really didnt give them much to do or say

and the end was just trite....not surprising or a great twist...

in conclusion......god, i wanna bang rosanna arquette

I have to go with the girls above me on this one--I am a girl and I loved this movie. (I must admit that I like Shiri Appleby, too) I thought that it was very well done and defitely brought up some socail issues while keeping it pretty light and really interesting the entire time.

So I guess I am on the love it side :)

Hmm

I'm not sure - i'm totally split on this one. I quite liked it, it amused me, but I found the story longer than it had to be and slightly predictable and cliche at times.
Overall I think I would give it a 5/10 (obviously) lol.

I can see this as being a love it or hate it kind of movie...and for me, it was all love.

I loved the whole thing and thought it was pretty funny. Like others who've posted I'm a girl, and yes I do appreciate "chick flicks," but I also got into this film. Like some others I'm also an admitted Shiri Appleby fan, I was seriously pleased with her performance. She was the reason I checked this out in the first place but it turned out to be a genuinely good movie. The actresses really rocked, they definitely stole the show. I think more people need to hear about this movie, then I am sure it would have a much bigger following.
