Consumer Reports doesn't like the Volt so far. Finds faults with others.

None of them (Volt, Prius, Leaf) do well in cold winters.

They questioned the Volts actual mileage for the money.

Not surprised. Consumer Reports has had problems in the past understanding technological products. I recall a very puzzling, and highly technically illiterate review of several computers by the magazine, back when computers were a new technology.

Example of the CR logic:

"If you drive about 70 miles, a Prius will actually get you more miles per gallon than the Volt does," Champion said."

This might just barely be true, assuming both the best MPG for the Prius and the worst for the Volt. But then all trips under 70 miles, mostly on electricity, would still be big wins for the Volt. Unless every single trip you make is 70 miles or longer, the Volt wins easily. And if you have a commute under 40 miles, you should burn almost no gasoline at all in day-to-day driving.

Typical CR lack of vision. I love their reliability ratings of used cars. But I have never followed their advice on new cars.

And toasters. They do great comparing toasters.

Lol! Right right, it's Consumer Reports' fault, not the actual product. Your world view is constantly amusing.

Hey, it's just an expression of my opinion, versus Consumer Report's opinion. you are entitled to your opinion as well.

Of course, I gave actual reasons why I thought their review was off the mark, which you have not addressed.

I thought I'd update this thread, now that Consumer Reports has clearly changed their tune on the Chevy Volt.

It is now one of their recommended cars, in fact the ONLY American car they recommend in the small car category:
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/types/new-models-by-category.h tm

It scored at the very top in their buyer satisfaction survey with 93%. This beats every other car, of any brand or type, surveyed by Consumer Reports:

The Volt also aced the reliability metrics in it's first model year, with the very top score in all the categories (except one, which was down just one single notch.)

(Apologies, a Consumer Reports subscription is needed to access the above link.)

While we're at it, Volt also garnered top crash-test safety ratings - a perfect five stars from NHTSA:

Top crash test rankings also from IIHS, whose ranking are used to set insurance rates:

Yes, I know about the Volt fire stories in the press. Just pointing out that it is not really a very serious matter (this is a fire that can start 3 weeks after a serious crash), and the agencies that understand this still rate Volt high for safety.
