the bottleneck is batteries

The only problem with the EV is the price and quality of long lasting rechargeable batteries. The so-called lithium polymer batteries aren't even polymer ones. Subsidising research and, later, production will help.

As in the government subsidizing this? All you get when the government subsidizes things is misallocation of resources, waste, and corruption. If there is money to be made with EV cars, let the producers invest their own money in it and they will find the solution.

Look at the computer industry. It's the least interfered with industry on the planet, and surprise! It's also the one with the most impressive results. The power of true free markets can be tapped by any industry, you just have to keep the government's paws off it.

I agree with this, but you can't fault the makers and purchasers of electric cars for wanting to play by the same rules everyone else plays by. Everything in the transportation world - gasoline, energy, trains, research, airports, foreign carmakers - is subsidized in various ways.

What we really need is a level playing field, but we live in a world where it's far easier to pass new subsidies than to get rid of old ones.

Further fundamental research may be needed; the results would be public domain. No corporation wants to invest in research it doesn't own. Also, I keep hearing a variety of expensive patents exist and they're so many that a private researcher is advised to lay off any work on a subject if it only marginally falls under an existing patent. Science shouldn't be private.

Intellectual property is of course a means
to protect American ownership of tech. The reality is, however, such that China successfully steals and copies anything it wants.

Killian is lying to you.

LOL! The government made the computer industry. And if you think there is no government interference.US is actually falling behind because Europe and Asian government are putting so much money into their R&D. You act like corporations are perfect entities that do everything right.Plenty of them are government subsidized and keep failing.
