Who killed the Rollerblade?

I've never understood why in-line skating failed so miserably. It's great exercise, it's an efficient means of transport, and it's never not fun. Big Skateboard isn't organized enough to wage a war on anyone, and in-line skates have never really been a threat to Big Bicycle. If it were socially acceptable, I would sell my car and use in-line skates as my only conveyance, but I would be ostracized, so I won't. What happened? Who is behind this?

I am learning inline skating and find it incredibly theuropatic and refreshing. However you simply cannot compare a phenomenon like the automobile industry to skating. This is a billion trillion dollar industry which effects every facet of our existence. Even survivalism. Besides, how do you see inline skating become a daily part of life? You can see office goers rollerblading to work? Moms prancing their babies on blades? Its just not feasable. It is fun for parks and sidewalks. That's about it.
