Towards the beginning of the film, Alice says the apartment next to his is for rent and that she'll move in to be closer to him but because he's so hung up on his dead gf/wife he doesn't seem enthusiastic so thats how she figured once he was over the past then they could be together and he WOULD be enthusiatic about them being closer/her moving in next door and they could tear the wall down.
