What it deserves, etc.

This movie deserves two things:

- an Academy Award nomination for Best Editing
- an immediate Criterion DVD release

It deserves the editing nod due to the fact that this was put together so seamlessly from footage shot simultaneously by 50 different cameras. In addition to simply cutting from camera to camera, the filmmakers added some 'awesome' special effects. The best example occurs during "Shake Your Rump" when an image of a young lady dancing in the crowd is juxtaposed with a shot of Mike D holding a similar pose at the exact same time. Freeze frames, cross-cuts, a "Predator-Vision"-type filter and a CG background of a tropical setting are all incorporated into this short sequence, which sent me into a state of temporary euphoria. It is HARD CORE.

The Criterion Release should happen as a sort of follow-up to the BBoys video anthology, which is already a Criterion release. It would only make sense for Criterion to give this movie the 'treatment' due to the originality found not only in its basic concept, but also for the execution of said concept.

These two things may or may not happen - I think the Criterion release is more likely than the Oscar nom. However, it's certain that any editor - upon seeing this movie - will be wholly impressed.

This movie also DESERVES to be seen. It is great. Can't wait for the DVD, Criterion or not.

Just saw this last night and it was definitely great, lots and lots of fun. I felt like I'd actually been to the show once it was all over.

While the editing must have been a massive Herculean job, the actual effects aren't really all that special. Most of them are just stock things that come with Avid/Final Cut. Not to say this wasn't a great movie-- it was.
