Sound capture?

I am very curious about how they capture the sound, I know they had to keep distance from these animals in order to not disturb them, as for the camera you can capture with tele-lens, but as for the microphone, you always have to keep as close as you can for the better register...

So anyone knows how they did it?

Or they just edited the sound afterward in the edition? by pasting sounds that are recorded previously?

Thanks,

Martin

PS: I am a flimmaker student, just thinking about to get a microphone and I was curious when i saw this film..

Shotgun mics and mics with parabolic reflectors can extend range considerably. Parabolic reflector mics have limited frequency response so it seems likely that shotgun mics were used in this film.

You post is more than a year old so I suspect you've already learned this in your film making classes. I decide to reply anyway on the chance that someone else might find the information useful.
