Remake of 12 Angry Men?

Sounds like a remake of one of my all-time favorite movies.

reply

yes it is.
and let me give you one pieve of advice, if 12 angry men is indeed one of your favourite movies, then for heavens sake don't watch this.
Well, my opinion...
But let me tell you this much... in this film, it is actually revealed who killed the father. And there's a very very cliché happy-end.
The acting is very good, the cinematography also, but the script is just awful.
Well if you want watch it, just be warned =)

thanks for the heads up TR. will probably put this at the bottom of my BB queue just in case...

Before I went to see it, I didn`t know it`s a remake. It was such a disapointment, I never see a point in a remake. Great acting though!

It's a great remake. Of course it breaks the mystery thing from the original when we completely didn't know who was that boy and was he really a killer (to me after 12 angry men it seemed like he was, but they couldn't prove it so he has to be set afree) but the point of this film is how Mihalkov could make the plot be so close to a russian person. It is very truly and honest movie. I think you has to live all your life in Russia and has it as you motherland to fully comprehend this movie. Also it felt like the director had something more to say about this theme and that's why he made a remake. Not like in other remakes when you can't understand what the hell for it was made. I like what Mihalkov added to the movie, I loved the stories people tell there and the acting was very well done. This movie deserved an Oscar. The reason it didn't get it is, as I said already, you has to be Russian to understand the whole thing about it.

That some fvcking finaly made russian remake to US movie must get an Oscar? Not gonna happen in a million years.

Who knows with the academy....a U.S. remake of a Cantonese film won Best Picture

reply

I hope it was a one time thing :)

reply

Yeah but thats because its a U.S. movie, if it was a Cantonese remake of a U.S. movie, then it would neveer EVER win an oscar, if you see what i mean

I believe in Harvey Dent :)

True true............and uh, I predict an Oscar coming up for the new Akira remake with Leo DiCaprio lol.

I totally disagree with that assessment of 12 Angry Men. It was as obvious as it could be without just coming out and saying it that the boy did not kill his father. Thus, all of the details of the moments surrounding the murder that were extrapolated from the unreliable testimony given by the so-called witnesses.

As far as a "remake" goes, there is no room for improvement in a work that is flawless. As well, I don't see what could be more relevant to the human condition than exposing the selfishness of our own petty wants when measured against a human life and the enactment of our prejudices in condoning the devaluation of that life. So I wouldn't be too sympathetic to another angle being put to this deceptively simple and profoundly deep story.

And to say that one would have to be Russian to understand it? Would one have to be American to understand Lumet's version? If so, how would a Russian director be able to adapt from a story which he doesn't fully understand? Or is it only the unique Russian perspective which is inexcessible to the outsider while varying world cultures are easily gotten at by the Russian thinker? It sounds rather like a bait and switch. Come see this thing you can't understand. Oh, you did understand it? Well, at least you saw it. I tend to skip remakes as a rule. The last time I broke that rule, I ended up seeing a terribly hyped multi-million dollar waste of time called King Kong which, for all of its modern FX, couldn't match the simple majesty of the haunting and moving original made waaaaaaay back in the stone age of cinema that was 1933.

12 angry men "sucked"???

too bad you posted your top 5, otherwise i could've made some cliché "go watch transformers" comment...

but, no, seriously... "sucked"???

reply

Sorry but i just didn't like it :P

Ok i'll give a couple of my reasons.

I thought that the pacing was way off, the sum of the first 40 minutes was Juror number 8 (?) saying, but it might, what if etc... I just didn't get anything from this. Then i kinda expected some kinda climax moment and it never came. Saying it sucked isn't fair, saying i didn't enjoy it is.

the only thing this film has to do with the original is the basic setting:
12 jurors, one room, one boy charged with killing his father.
the messages and ways of story telling couldnt be more different.
the movie does not stay in the same room all the time, a lot of flashbacks. and as i said the killer is revealed...

I thought the same thing. I'm not familiar with the movie, though, just the short story.

I came very close to watching this film before the original. I've had 12 angry men and have been meaning to watch it for a few months now. I. Would have been very dissapointed if I had seen this first. I read the plot and thought to myself how similarly to what I had heard the plot 12 angry men was.

Glad I didn't.

reply

It may not be as great as the original Lumet movie but this is indeed a great remake with the finest actings.

I'm glad you replied to me. I had skipped over this film after seeing the original, but even if it's a competent remake rather than amazing then it'll be worth my time.

Rather than payin attention to the negative overly personal comments I think you should just see it and decide for yourself.Who knows? Maybe you will just love it maybe you will just hate. Different folks different tastes:)
