Are there only 7 names in Russia?

and every guy is a Vanya, Vasya, Kolya, Sasha, Dima, Vova
I believe the problem is with the Orthodox church having a list of "approved" names based on the names of the saints. However, I think the situation is changing, albeit slowly.
Hama cheez ba-Beer behtar meshawad!
Atheism was encouraged for a long time. During that era did people still rely on church-approved names? I went to Russia, Ukraine in the late 1980's, and the only people who were in the churches we saw were very old women.
shareFrom what I understand, those names are traditional so are the most common. For a while revolution-related terms were trendy as names and then there was a fad of using foreign or new age names but traditional names are still the most common.
