US just as Evil as Russia

Stop kidding yourselves, everything Russia did and tried to do throughout much of Europe was being matched by the United States during that same time period. I won't even get into the atrocities we commited against the Native Americans and Africans

Get Real.

Its 1950,there are 2 actors (or teachers or train drivers).
One lives in America and is a communist.
He is subject to the Mcarthy anti communist era and finds it hard to get much work,he does not starve,he has to change jobs.
By the 1960s he can work as an actor again,if he had wanted to he could have left America and lived and worked anywhere in the world.

Another actor lives in the USSR,he is anti communist,he is sacked from his job in the local state theatre, his wife informs on him to the KGB and she is promoted at work.
The man is jailed for years in a work camp far from where he used to live,he is often beaten up by the guards.
He is relased in the liberal period in the early 1960s,he is banned forever from decent jobs and like everybody else is the USSR he is not allowed to leave his republic never mind the USSR.

The USSR killed many thousands of its own people in camps and jails in the years it existed.

The USA killed people in the Third World during the cold war but how many? a few hundred? at worst a few thousand.

Would it be fair to split the many people killed in proxy wars during the Cold War in half?

The US tried to influence politics in Europe and the Third World by dirty tricks and sponsoring moderate political groups, the USSR tried to promote revolution by supporting front organisations and supporting militant groups.

The crimes against the slaves and the native Americans were a lot longer ago than the crimes of the USSR so it is difficult to compare the two I think.
Do you think the Russians did not murder natives when they created their empire?

There is a lot long with the USA but you can't compare the USA with all its ideals and freedom with the Soviet dictatorship.
I am old enough to have visited East Germany and the USSR and saw the Berlin Wall and the KGB border guards,it looked to me like they were keeping people in rather than stopping people from the West forcing their way into the Eastern Bloc.

"Do you think the Russians did not murder natives when they created their empire?"

Yes. The Imperial Russians were infamous for it. As were the Bolsheviks

"There is a lot long with the USA but you can't compare the USA with all its ideals and freedom with the Soviet dictatorship".

Indeed. I'll take America, warts and all, over the USSR any day.

Don't get me started on these guys who look for moral equivalence between them.

reply

Stop kidding YOURSELF, there is no comparison, and I am sure you know that very well. It is a very simple approach to the problem, but let us consider the traffic of refugees and those who fled for political reasons. How many people defected from the West to the Soviet Bloc? I think that the flow of political refugees is a good barometer of the nature of a regime. Ask yourself - do you wish that the Soviet Union had won the Cold War? There is no question that the US got its hands very dirty and did things that it should not have, but I have no doubt that in a comparison, we would look alot better by miles than the Soviets.

reply

Not really a comparison. The US changed and evolved but the Soviet Union were brutal all the time.Stalin was a paranoid psychopath that killed his own advisors, officers, etc. Because he thought that they might turn against him.

Basically if you were in the Soviet Union. You could be killed, raped, tortured, sent to work camp at anytime. For absolutely no reason or saying the wrong thing. Stalin terrorized his own people and sent millions to work camps and/or killed them. He even killed his own generals and the head of the soviet army. He killed and enslaved everyone.Soviet Union fell so far behind because he killed engineers, scientists, etc that didn't work fast enough. His wife killed herself.

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

reply

A bit ironic someone calling themselves "atheist revolution" decrying Bolshevism...

It's not "sci-fi", it's SF!

reply

Yea,because that's exactly the same, dumbass. Its exactly like establishing an autocratic, centralized state.

A bit passive aggressive too, I see.

I love atheists, they're like adolescents. They're young enough to think that they know everything. LOL!

Possibly one of the stupidest folders in the history of the internet. Moral relativism is what you get in a socialist educational system.

What was the Lenin quote in the mini-series ? "Useful idiots ?" Rxactly.

This is just not true. You obviously don't have enough information on Soviet history. It is full of atrocities and crimes against humanity of unthinkable scale. I suggest you go and see "The Soviet Story" movie (it's available online).

You can't seriously compare the country based on civil rights & liberties with totalitarian regime and say they're the same.

reply

America has never been perfect, but only a fool or a tool could really make such a statement. I am betting on "tool."

reply

Yep. If the original poster truly believed this, then he would have ended up in either the Lubyianka Prison with a bullet in the back if his head or the living hell of the Gulag for writing what he did. Moron.
