Major Plot Hole? Spoiler

Guns have serial numbers. It would've been easy enough to look up the serial number Crawford's (Anthony Hopkins) gun should've had and seen that it doesn't match the number on the gun itself.

Furthermore, they would have looked up the number on the gun and seen that it was registered to the police officer.

This exact "plot hole" is explained in a thread below. I quote:

"The gun that was used to kill the wife, was the cops gun. Anthony Hopkins switched guns with the cop at the hotel earlier in the day.

"He used the cops gun to kill his wife

"when cop came to arrest Hopkins, hopkins switched the guns back. So the cop walked the murder weapon out of the house and was wearing it the entire time.

"When hopkins gun was tested, the result was that it was NOT the murder weapon.

"And thats why they couldnt figure out where the actual murder weapon was.

"I dont know how youd think they could easily trace the gun back to the cop. Theyd have to test his gun to know if it matched the bullets. THey couldnt easily figure out it was the cops gun with just the bullets.

"This is not a plot hole, you just arent very observant."

BTW, I’m just quoting the answer below verbatim - sorry for quoting the insulting stuff too but I avoid editing other folks’ responses

More serious issue though rarely addressed in movies - you can tell when a gun has been recently fired unless you never clean it, and a police detective would definitely clean his gun regularly.

Jig should've been up the instant he retrieved his gun, or at least later that evening when he took it off again

"a police detective would definitely clean his gun regularly."

Odd assumption, and an incorrect one, too. The reason cops and especially detectives carried revolvers long after automatic pistols became popular is because cops don't clean their guns all that often, if at all. Revolvers were/are(?) more reliable, even when not cleaned, so they were standard issue for much longer than they otherwise would have been.
