Similar Dark Comedies?

Hi,

I recently watched Dead End and I loved it. Then after seeing that Big Nothing is directed by the same man I watched it too. Found it to be awesome.

I've seen Snatch and Very Bad Things and I would say they are both dark comedies in rougly the same genre.

My question is: Are there other similar movies out there?

Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were satirical and sardonic. They were lampooning movies and in no way dark comedies. There is a certain something that makes a comedy "dark" and although Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had dark scenes, they were meant as jokes towards other movies with similar scenes.

Nobel Son is another great example, that just came out.

reply

So a lampoon cannot be a dark comedy? You really need to understand what that means then. Both movies are dark comedies, just because they include some satire does not remove them from the category.

If you're looking for other dark comedies, I'd recommend "Drowning Mona" and "9 Dead Gay Guys", both excellent, if a little strange.

reply

I disagree. Both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are dark to be funny, especially in regards to the deaths in both and the castle scene in Hot Fuzz. Another movie that fits this description is The Cable Guy. Many people consider it to be a dark comedy, but it does not have the essence of one. True dark comedies attain their comedic effect from irony. The irony of the crime in Fargo, the irony of the crime in Big Nothing, and the irony in Nobel Son are perfect examples. I do not think I need to understand anything differently. You might have a different perception than me, but that doesn't make me wrong.

2 days in the valley is similar to this too, very enjoyable movie

The cottage is a very similar comedy, very dark and funny. And if you're not afraid of foreing movies, El Crimen Ferpecto, El dia de la bestia and la comunidad, 3 moovies directed by the very talented Alex de la Iglesia, are great dark comedies.

it's only when you have lost everything that you're free to do anything

A bit dated but the same kind of budget UK film: Shallow Grave

the whole nine yards. eulogy. cable guy.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned "The Ladykillers"... I found the "look and feel" strikingly similar.

Drowning Mona, and Grosse Point Blank.

There are many good dark comedies, but as for movies similar to this I'd go with In Bruges (as many others have mentioned), Misery, Pulp Fiction and almost anything by the Coen Brothers (a few of their films like Miller's Crossing and No Country for Old Men don't have much comedy but I'd highly reccomend Fargo and Burn after Reading).

Kiss me, I bleed
Last seen: Slumdog Millionaire, 9/10

Definately Shallow Grave, as previously mentioned. Very Bad Things too. Those two and Big Nothing are so similar in feeling it is beyond strange as they have nothing to do with each other (director, a cast member, writer, etc). I've never seen 3 unrelated films be so close in atmosphere.

I'm just a bloody normal bloke. A normal bloke who likes a bit of torture.

I have always been a big fan of Suicide Kings. It was in Drama at the video store I used to work at, but I always thought it was very darkly funny. That may just be me though :)

You will love '11:14'! same humour, much more substancial.
