Did they run into production problems?

The ending is completely messed up, opting for a 1 minute loop of the same sequence which is almost nauseating to watch. Also the film introduces the 1st to 4th circle but the sequence stops after that... Doesn't dante's inferno talk of 7 circles? This all points to some kind of production issues.

Anyone else that saw the film notice this?

It's a pity as it ruined a terrificly tense and atmospheric film.

it was diabolical gibberish. The ending where he pops into space and heals the planet is just stuck on there with no reason, like they panicked and thought 'let's shut this turkey down fast!'. Anyway, why did the divine St Georges need a spacesuit? He's a god after all. The amount of ludicrous plot lines in the movie was amazing. Ideas that could have gone somewhere (nanos to control personality defects) were unexplored. The evil doctor was wasted. If she was sent somehow to do St Georges in, why did she waste time administering the nano serum to the other inmates first and one at a time? Why did they want him dead in the first place? Who were the Nuerinos? Why were the loonies allowed free reign and why was a hospital for the criminally insane in deep space instead of on dry land?
The entire film struck me as a few half baked ideas Caro thought he could string together but realised he'd bitten off more than he could chew (or perhaps less than the audience could). So he threw in some half hearted action and that tragic ending and got out quick. Apparently he's upset about the editing. Sounds like some furious buck passing going on. Zut alors!!

The film was budgeted 8 million euros, but it was cut back to 4 millions.
Caro had originaly a different ending in mind but could'nt make it with that new budget.

I agree with most people's opinions in this thread. The film up till the last ten or so minutes was fine but then it felt like it ran out of money and / or was rushed. The build-up to the final sequence felt like it needed another ten-twenty minutes.

A good film in my opinion but could have, for me, been up there with 'Sunshine' had it not been rushed / edited in the final leg.

Hovis!

The film definitely suffered as a result of the break-up between Jeunet and Caro; it's been kicking around for a couple of years or so and obviously someone thought they'd better cut their losses and rely on DVD sales. Pity.

"I understood the ending as him simple terraforming Dante 01 with the help of the internally stored nanomachines."

Simple, never challenge an audience.
At least never challenge and American audience.

I love when people boil a crap movie down to it being too "challenging" for some audiences. This movie just wasn't good. I was just put out there and you're supposed to accept everything with absolutely no explanation. The only thing that's challenging is that fact that the movie seems incomplete, as has been said.

The truth hurts, doesn't it? Hate to break it to you, but America has some of the most dumbed-down, illiterate people in the world living there and I know because I live among them. And Hollywood knows this too, dumbing-down their films accordingly, pretty much never creating any challenging films.

What you mean to say is that the movie wasn't entertaining to you. However, for those who watch films for reasons other than to be merely entertained, it was a very well-done film by a director with some of the best films ever on his resume (City of Lost Children, Delicatessen). Not to mention the underrated Alien Resurrection film (the Special Edition being the better version, in my opinion)...

I thought my DVD skipped and I missed about thirty minutes of film. I had to go back and look at why the one escape pod blew up in the atmosphere for no reason. The movie was bad. 5-stars is way too much for this. This isn't an instance of an ending going over anyone's head, it's just bad bad storytelling. People here have already said it better than I could, but the plot holes and nonsensical parts of the plot just make for a very bad movie. I think what gets most of us is that it had a great set-up and could have been a very good movie but it just fell apart, sort of like that guy's suit in the coolant, lol. And to the people on the board talking about Christian "propaganda" - go read a few books. The story of Christ isn't even original. These are just allegorical stories of archetypal mythologies found in all religions, you just happen to be more informed about the Christ story to relate it all to it. Funny, isn't it?

Actually im pretty sure that Hell has nine circles with satan being in the last one made of ice; i have to agree with everyone else the movie was going along pretty well, i thought it would be an event horizion with more twist or something and then it just fell apart, they escape on the ship only to fly straight into the planet, he cools the planet, why was such an important access point on the ship in such an ungodly place.

I agree entirely, and was thinking the same things you were. I wondered if there was something wrong with the DVD I had. I literally skipped back, thinking that, somehow, I had missed at least 1 scene if not more. How long until they realized that Cesars attempt failed? It certainly wouldn't have been instant. Also, so what if he cools the planet? It's not like heat generates gravity. They would still be smashing into it in short order.

This was an absolutely excellent movie until the moment the voiceover starts and you see Saint George moving out into space. It's a tragedy that this film was marred by such a slipshod rushed ending!

I too think the movie was kinda good until the end... the "terraforming by nanomachines idea makes it slightly better...
.
What I can't stand even worse than the Cristian propaganda was the "human rights" propaganda...
