She held a resentment for Gideon because he was gone when her mother died and Gideon wasn't there. It was something she couldn't let go of and it distanced her from Gideon. I noticed her face was always very expressionless especially around Gideon. It was her way of not forgiving him I suppose. The sad song expressed it all.
