girlie beemer 4wd

Why did Charlie and co choose that girlie beemer 4wd? was it because BMW was picking up the tab? Let's face it this heap could break down on the blacktop! The Dakar is difficult, granted, but these blokes ought to try a rally in Oz outback.

I know what you mean. The X5 wasn't the best choice given the terrain they were going to be travelling, but in all fairness I think a lot of the blame should be heaped on Scorpion. They, after all, had been commissioned to prepare the X5 as a support vehicle for the Dakar, and despite having months to prepare it, had done bugger-all by the time it was time to set out for Lisbon. Given that I doubt I'd bother getting them to prepare a pushbike for a trip to the local park.

But it was still a poor choice. It's predominently a road vehicle, not an off-road vehicle...ie. built for comfort not for terrain and desert conditions.

Glad you agree, think one of the big jappos (Nissan, Tootota, Mitsu) etc would have been a better choice. But with Beemer picking up the tab for the bikes, I don't think the team had much choicr

The X5 is really a 'Chelsea Tractor' more suited for Charleys wife to take the kids to school in.

Maybe after the success with the Beemer bikes on Long Way Round, the team felt confident enough to try Beemer's 4wd cars. But clearly it wasa poor choice: BMW make brilliant off-road bikes, no question. But the X5 is indeed just a Chelsea Tractor, not helped by the poor customising by Scorpion.
