meaning of boy in swimming pool

Does the "drowning" (not) of the boy in the swimming pool have any meaning in the revenge, or is it just that Melanie explains him to "try harder"?

reply

I think this has two significations :

a- to make us think that she'll take revenge by killing the boy soon or later

b- to reflect her cold elitism and 'try harder' side. Just like when she said coldly that 'it's nothing' when the boy is having pain at the hand while playing piano.
She is very perfectionnist and may not understand that other poeple just don't give everything to achieve something.

I think both points are very plausible ones. Perhaps it was also the power she held over the boy and that she could just kill him there and then if she wanted as well?

Yes, I do think good reasons are given. For me it felt as if the film was telling me at that point that Mélanie really had evil on her mind and that she was dangerous and serious about her revenge.
Also her not killing the boy and putting it to 'I was helping you do better', she puts herself out of the path of any legal claims, so to speak. I think that's the power of Mélanie's entire vengeance; it seems as if she, legally speaking, did nothing wrong. (except if you enhance the theory that she was also the person who hit Ariane with a car)

I agree with Trewyn: it shows the audience how cold-hearted she is that she could hold him down while he struggles, and then how calculating she is for having a ready answer so that he will have his doubts and not see the act as sadistic.

You could see she was cold-hearted and not right in her head also by the way she wanted to break some innocent girl's fingers at the beginning of the movie.

When she walked in, I do not know about you - I thought he had drowned. She basically stared and did nothing. This film reminds me of the "Hand that Rocks the Cradle" - obviusly a little more subtle (ok, a lot more subtle)

I was watching this movie from the cable at home. Which I don't really pay attention to the movie from the cable...But this film kept me for hours to sit and not go for bathroom. It's interesting that how the film gonna tell you, When the page turner gonna revenge from the pianist and how. I mean in this case, she just hold the kid's head for more than 5 secs. , which really make the audiences feels really stund. and after she told him that he beat his record, that makes me feel like you think "try harder"
