How does she know

that Ariane has lesbian tendencies? I wouldn't have guessed that of her, but it was her main manipulation tool.

In this world you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. For years I was smart.I recommend pleasant

I didn't get the impression that she was prone to lesbian tendencies but rather Melanie subtly seduced a fragile woman, a woman who's husband was away from home quite often, and although they seem to have a loving relationship she is probably lonely.
And then along comes Melanie, an attractive young girl who not only knows how to read music but who can also play the piano and turns out to be an excellent pageturner giving Ariane a newfound confidence which helps her through the first concert.
There are several brilliantly thought out steps to the seduction:
Firstly gives Ariane confidence, which makes her dependant on her.
Secondly she goes to find her before the start of the concert and takes her hand, this makes Ariane think that she cares for her. Then the roles are reversed, Melanie goes off to the same place Ariane was and Ariane comes for her, this shows Melanie that she cares for her, then she kisses her tenderly nearer to the mouth than the cheek - hesitant affection.
All the while she's getting close to Tristan, and parents love it when people get on with and show an interest in their children. This leads to the incident where Melanie is reaching to take hold of Ariane's hand, which is interrupted by Tristan. This is an excitingly dangerous incident, the excitement of which is not lost on Ariane.
Then the scene with the cellist could be seen as a man being left with a younger attractive woman, his wife asks what he's getting up to up there, which she probably has a good idea of. Ariane could take the so called accident, which both his wife and Ariane most likely suspect as not being so as Melanie rejecting his advances out of some kind of loyalty to her, but I am probably reading too much into this scene as those two characters are not really that well developed (I think the typical hollywood thing to have done here was have the two women discuss a previous affair the man had, or his tendency to flirt with younger woman).
Then we have the changing room scene, Melanie obviously lets Ariane see her getting changed, and we see her taking an interest the naked Melanie, who she has already seen in a bikini (although I may actually have the movie timeline wrong here, I have a nagging suspicion the bikini scene happend later).
Then Melanie's male friend appearing and her talking to him in a friendly way may make Ariane jealous which would heighten her feelings for the young girl.
And then at the second concert Melanie abandons Ariane and she is forced to find a replacement pageturner, Melanie knows that this will more than likely affect Ariane's performance. But Ariane is not angry at her, she probably puts it down to her being nervous and thereforce can identify with her, reminding her of herself, a person who she obviously thinks of highly. Then in the car Melanie doesn't try to make any excuses, she just says sorry and places her hand on Ariane's, another sign of affection for her, which by kissing Melanie's hand she returns.
Then inadvertantly Ariane's violinist friend questions her about what is wrong with her, and quickly guesses that it may have something to do with Melanie, which Ariane confirms with concerns over her husband finding out, which again is an excitingly dangerous situation as she would stand to lose everything.
Then finally we have Melanie asking for an autograph, which Ariane reads as her wanting a photograph of the woman she loves whom she may not see again, atleast until next November.
And now that I have analysed it like that it makes me realise just what brilliant a job the writer has done, too often in television and movies you'll see women easily seducing and falling in love with other women, but here we see it as much slower process.

Anyway, that's just my take on it, I could be completely wrong. And well done for reading all of that text - if any of you have :P

Thank you I read it ! I am trying to find out what kind of person was Melanie ?

I don't think she moved into her house as a revenge mechanism. I think she was surprised to see her again. I also think she had a certain degree of attraction to her. When she rubbed the cream on her face, she closed her eyes. When you dislike someone and they touch you, your knee-jerk reaction is going to be to tense up - not to close your eyes.

And how did she know she would get a photo with "i love you" written on the back? Had she just gotten a photo with an autograph and a friendly mesage het whole scheme would go to pieces. Except that the child would have an arm ache.

A personal message is expected on an autograph. It seemed Ariane fell hard, and she clearly wants Melanie to remember her. I just thought it was expected.

She probably would have found a different way to execute her plan. Besides, she did ask for that autograph in a seductive tone. Ariane picked up on that and saw that as her opportunity to let Melanie know she was willing to have an affair with her.

Obviously she didn't know what the message would be. Had it been more innocuous, Melanie could have continued the relationship by mail. But she was hopeful that she would eventually get something explicit in writing that she could show to the husband.

Even if she wasn't able to disrupt Ariane's marriage, her main revenge was destroying Ariane's career.

its story was absurd because it required so many far-fetched plot devices to make events move along. In order to enact her revenge, Melanie has to first be hired at the husband's office, then as a nanny, and then as a page turner. It all falls way too neatly into place. Then Melanie has to rely on Ariane being receptive to the idea of a lesbian relationship

Melanie is taking advantage of the situation as it unfolds. She got the internship by writing a very enthusiastic application letter. Her initial plan was probably just to seduce the husband and make sure Ariane found out about it. But then she learned about the nanny position and she was able to work her way further into the family, changing her plans as she went. Yes, many things did seem to fall into place for her, but it wasn't just good luck. If events had gone differently, she would just have enacted a different form of revenge. There is a hint of an earlier failed plan, Ariane's injury by a hit and run driver. It may have been that Melanie was the driver, and having her plan fail, she then thought about seducing the husband.

She tells her to approach Melanie with her feelings! Some friend!

Virginie doesn't say anything about approaching Melanie or acting on her feelings. All she says is "It's important to recognize your feelings."

I think a lot pf people from artistic milieus have quite complex attitude to sexuality and relationships. And apart from that, Ariane was not happy with ther husband, and her friend must have known that. A man who has only a superficial interest and idea about music, and who spends most of the time in his office, he possibly treated her career as a sign of backing up his prestige as well. Of course he loved her, but he didnt really understand her. And he was definitely not a personality Arianne needed, which her friends must have realised better than the husband herself. Arianne needed someone very confident, who would tell her what to do.

First off: I didn't have time to read any of the replies (there are just too many of them!), so sorry if i am repeating someone's else's post above.

I'd have to say Mélanie didn't really know for sure that Ariane had lesbian tendencies, she just took a chance & went for it.

Melanie is smokin' hot in this movie. She knows it. She knows that most guys would go for her and she is hot enough to know she could probably turn a supposedly straight women bisexual. That's why she started with 'just in innocent kiss..' But of course it wasn't so innocent, was it?

Great movie. Grade: B+.
