Why does Ariane faint?

Does Ariane faint because she realizes that Melanie has created this elaborate plot for revenge? As she hears her son play the same piece that Melanie played at the recital she realizes in an instant how her flippant attitude had destroyed Melanie's ambitions.

reply

I think she fainted because Melanie betrayed her and possibly ruined her marriage. I do not think she recognized the piece that her son was playing.

reply

Hi!

Hope you´re very fine.

Well, I guess Ariane faints because she discovers that Melanié betrayed her and her marriage is ruined.

By all means,

You know Melanie DID reveal herself by asking for a signed photo of Ariane... that's the real beauty in the ending.
That's why Ariane fainted!!

Think back to the beginning, when young Melanie was playing and got interrupted by a fan of Ariane, who came in and wanted to have a signed photo of her... which Ariane gave despite the fact that by doing this she ruined the competition for young Melanie...

That's why Ariane fainted at the end of the movie, she linked those two events. Both of them involving signing a photograph of herself, made her think back and reflect... and BANG it all goes black before here eyes... marvellous.

I don't think that Ariane linked the events. Melanie's bad audition happened years before she came to work for Ariane. Ariane has signed hundreds, if not thousands of autographs. Surely she does not remember Melanie's audition.

reply

This was my take as well, that it was the memory of the autograph, not the piece. I've just watched both scenes twice and I don't believe her son was playing the same piece.

reply

Nah, that's the Scooby Doo theory where everything is wrapped up nicely. The signed photo at the end is poetic justice for Melanie but there no way Ariane, the selfish prima donna would link this to signing an autograph in an audition where a student faltered. She faints because, like all self-entitled divas, she simply can't comprehend being accountable for her misdeeds, and in this case there's absolutely no way she can avoid it.

reply

Because she's a wimp.

Oh whisky, leave me alone.

Go to bed!

Ariana faints because her world, life as she knows it, goes to pieces right before her eyes.

Earlier in the story she revealed that she was totally dependent on her husband, who owns everything, coming from a wealthy family. When he discovers his wife has a crush on Melanie, you can only guess what he will do, but it isn't much good. What she doesn't know however at that point, is that Melanie has ruined the future for Tristan, her son, who she coaxed into rehearsing a Bach piece at a rate of 140 per minute, thereby ruining the tendons in one of his arms ('my arm hurts', he tells his mother. Go on, she says, show your father how you made progress while he was away... )

Life is over. Melanie has her revenge. She killed without so much as a drop of blood flowing.
