Adrien's Character

What did you think of Adrien's character? I found him, like all of the others, actually, to be incredibly annoying - which I think is good. I think it was one of the film's qualities that all of the characters were somehow not very good at dealing with certain things. But, man, he was such a twat at times!

'I don't think that gays and straights can get along' and stuff like that really frustrated me. I think it's partly because I know someone a bit like him in real life.

Phew! Still reeling from the film.

Well, if your French is poor and if you watch the movie without subtitles, he actually appears as one of the better characters. :-D

I disliked Manu most. For his plucked eyebrows, his teeth and the shallow fact that he only wore 'like' two shirts throughout the whole movie. Did you notice the one with blue and yellow stripes? Well, he wore it in the hot South (near Marseille, was it?), where you need to change even more often then in the North, yet he put it on again as he went out on the night of the return. If I'm not mistaken, he had even commented on needing to take a shower or something like that before he put it on again. Hello? Put the shirt in the washing machine while you're at it. But as we saw later (in the scene when Mehdi took his gun), washing, like changing, just wasn't one of his features.

Interesting, what you notice/see if you don't/can't listen. :)

All in all, after seeing several Techine's pictures and the commercial for this one at Cannes or Cannes-related show (or somewhere else completely) I must say I'm pretty disappointed with the film. Actually, what I liked most, were the scenes of the 2nd vacation in Marseille, which differed from the frist only by Manu's replacement with Steve. That's when I realized Adrien must've been quite a stud and that Manu hadn't been so special after all. And that life goes on...

Wow, I thought Sarah was the most dislikeable. She cared nothing for her kid--or her husband. She was just a selfish B*%ch in my book. The rest were annoying, but Sarah was easily worst.

Having only a few clothes to wear all the time is typical of the French.

It was a good movie.

Adrien is what was once referred to as a 'troll' when i lived in L.A. That is, a older man who hangs out with younger boys.

i agree. (also proved by the fact that others in this thread have pointed out other characters)

what surprised me most was why Adrien wasn't worrying about his own health? He was cruising as well, wouldn't he be scared to have catched the HIV virus as well..

I disagree that Julie cared nothing for her brother - she loved him very much and focusing on her singing career was her means of dealing with his illness and dying. I never doubted how much she cared for him, and she demonstrated that on numerous occasions.

Having said that, I agree with the OP that all of the characters were realistically flawed, and all of them frankly asked for a slap at one time or another. It was often difficult to know who to side with at any particular time, so I ended up interested in all of the principals, and believing in their problems.

I do not believe Adrien was a sexually active gay man. I believe he was the center of the movie. He was the person who everybody in the movie was connected to. He is a doctor and as a doctor he was right in not telling about his patients even though they all knew each other. He really helped Manu a lot. I liked the guy. Who I thought was a hypocrite was the hubby.
