Back around Season 1 to season 6-ish I would have been like "NO!!!!", but now, I never bother with the show, and even back when I did, the last "excelent" season was probably season 4, and while I didn't hate it during season 5 onwards, it was season 5 when the flaws started to creep in for me.

I don't even hate it now, I just kind of stopped caring, as nothing was really "grabbing" me about it. No offense to current fans.

I think the move to Scotland was the beginning of the end.

I think I actually missed the storyline where that happened, unless I forgot them mentioning it. Was it after that guy demolished the school because he was angry about something (i.e was the new school in Scotland)?

I remember thinking at the time, when I saw the posts here (but didn't bother to read them) that it meant Waterloo Road was moving to Scottish TV or something.

reply

If memory serves, it was well after the guy who tried to demolish the school.

I think what happened was the Rochdale council were going to shut the school down, and a former pupil of the headteacher Byrne (who become a self made millionaire), had offered to open an independent free school with him as head. So essentially Byrne just took the school to Scotland and the staff and pupils followed him (which seemed totally bizarre). Then the millionaire ex-pupil gave the school to the council in Scotland because she was loosing money, like it was a mistake to make the school independent in the first place.

Wow.

I must have already stopped paying full attention to the show by that point, as I can't remember any of that. Eitherway it seems like a strange storyline, and a bit forced.

reply

Totally. It probably sounds much worse than it played out, but that's basically what happened! The series lost any sense of realism after that I feel.

I think it was handled totally wrong, I understand moving the set to save on budget costs which I believe was the reason, but they could have just changed location and still pretended the school was in Rochdale or left it ambiguous.

Anyway...the show has had a decent run and I agree with you it's best days have been long gone.

The reason for it was that the BBC wanted to start making more programmes in Scotland.

I can't say I'm sorry. In my opinion the show went downhill very quickly after it was moved to Scotland. The characters and storylines were either really bland or silly - I was surprised that BBC didn't pull the plug sooner.

Many people seem to have lost interest in the show now anyway, myself included. I remember there was a time when everyone at school used to talk about it, now, well it just seems to have been forgotten.

It should had been cancelled ages ago.

The move to Scotland is a disaster. In fact its a joke.

The show is now so badly written and the ratings are stinking.

Its that man again!!

reply

So bad that it has been moved to BBC 3 for prime time and only repeated on the main BBC channel at 10.35. It is about as believable now as a depiction of a profession as DOCTORS.
