Homophobic?

What the hell is up with this movie? Every character has serious hatred to homosexuals and shudder to even think about it. Its like it was made in the 50s or something. There was one homosexual character and he was portrayed as a sexual deviant who would just sleep with everyone. And then all the scenes where travolta is like "HEY DONT TOUCH ME THAT COULD BE GAY" and all the rolling eyes and other hilarity. The fact that this movie is popular and aimed at children is whats wrong with america.

Also its not funny at all and the whole "violence is funny and ok", in reality the bikers would've just shot them. Hilarious.

reply

Travolta's character didn't like being touched from the start, it had nothing to do with the gay cop coming around though that didn't help matters.

And if you don't think it's funny at all, I'll admit it's not Charlie Chaplin or 3 Stooges or Saturday night Live, but it is funny.

reply

No. Is not homophobic. If a gay dude like the police man arrouses you, of curse you will want to kick his butt.
and Travolta dislike being touched? Is common, not homphobic at all.

I thought he was just a naive idiot.

Remember when Dudley smelled Woody's neck and he said I felt you smell my neck if you do while riding B I'm going to throw you into traffic. He didn't like people that close to him.

reply

There was also that biker that said he was going to chew the Wild Hogs' balls, but it was never confirmed that he was gay.

I think they did go overboard with the cop. I like John C. McGinley, but his first appearance was enough. Making him come back later on was unnecessary.

I guess they couldn't think of another way to make a gay person funny except to also make him a creep.

reply

wow, is this really the type of movie worth over-analyzing like this? is this really a political piece done on homosexuality? no, it's a cheesey pg-13 movie. SERIOUSLY get a hobby, you really need one. go find something worthwhile to be outraged about

reply

Anyone else who thought most of the time that Dudley was gay? There were plenty of references for his character, I was actually surprised he went for (very hot) Marisa Tomei.

Although, he tries to impress the lady in the restaurant in the 'Alternative specs'-scene.

I thought the cop has some of the best scenes in the movie. and the fact that they didn't dance around "gay" shows just how much the world is changing. for the better.
I didn't find it homophobic at all. more the opposite in fact.

reply

> No I don't have a problem with homo's...
> but like the cop was doing if they were trying
> to chat me up or whatever i'll tell them where to go.

Or you could just tell him "Thanks, but I'm not interested." The fact that you 're so defensive certainly makes you come off as homophobic. Think about it.

I agree with cramsl. If all you overly sensitive PC people had your way there wouldn't be a single joke in any movie lest it offend someone or something.

It's rated PG-13 for a reason. If it were a kids movie it would be rated PG.

If you think about it, the MPAA think that every movie released in America is "for kids". The highest rating is NC17, and if you're under 18 then you're still a kid. Heck, you have to be 21 to buy a beer, so you could argue that this age is when the government in the USA decides that you're an adult.

reply

Who the hell said it was aimed at kids??? It was aimed at middle-aged guys, just like the main characters of this movie.

I must correct you here. There was only one OBVIOUS gay character. We don't know the sexual orientation of most of the townspeople because (like reality) many gay people don't make their sexual orientation obvious.

I agree that Travolta's character had some serious homophobia going on though.

Sounds like you're offended to me. And by the way, "white woman" should be caucasian woman, "she was black" should be she was African American, and "I'm gay" should really be I'm homosexual since the word gay probably offends some people. Actually, the word woman probably offends some people too so in the future you should use female. Come to think of it, the words "idiots" and "stupid" are quite offensive too. You should say mentally challenged.

I sure hope you're joking, because you sound "mentally challenged" to me.
I'm a white woman, and the term doesn't offend me at all. I have a very good friend who is a black woman, and that term doesn't offend her at all. She doesn't consider herself an African American; she was born here in the US, so if anything, she's a black American woman. An African American is an African who emigrates to America, and they can be black or white (or caucasian, if you prefer). My nephew is gay, and the term doesn't bother him. He doesn't care if you call him gay or homosexual, as long as you're not bashing him while you do it.
They're words. They only have the power we give them. It's exhausting trying to keep up with what's politically correct; they change day to day.
This is a movie. Not a homophobic statement aimed at making children hate gays. Just a VERY funny movie about a bunch of guys, all good friend, who go on a road trip and get into trouble with a gang of bikers. Just relax and enjoy it. Why look for deep, hidden meanings? Somebody here needs to slap a bull or something.

How's this gonna work if you don't do what I say?

reply

I found it ironic considering that Travolta has been dogged by rumours about his sexuality throughout his whole career.

That's the current state of American movies; usually, in the only movies where gays are taken seriously and not for a few cheap laughs, they die at the end....

I'm not going to get involved in the rights and wrongs of the homour related to the gay policeman, but what I found weird was that he didn't come back into film one more time to meet the bikers as they left town. It was almost as though the script writers completely forgot about him in the 2nd half of the film.

reply

I think in the original ending, instead of having them arrive at their destination, the cop on the bike tried to pull them over, but they didn't stop. The camera pulled away to show a broad landscape, with the bike chase still going on, and then the movie was over.

"Your dumb" My dumb what?

He was written back into the movie in the alternative ending.
