True Crime

What case was this story based on?

I could not find anything more than some non-specific references.

There was this squib from the online edition of V magazine, in an article when the movie received its theatrical release in the United States:

The movie started off by chance. Director Pascal Arnold was leafing through a newspaper when a seven-line tidbit jumped out at him. The news item told of a brother and sister who were very close, in the unique fashion of siblings in French cinema, and then the brother was murdered. The girl asked their friends to help investigate the crime and, to her horror, it turned out that they had done it. No reason for the murder was given.

There was also this exchange in a French-language interview, in which the length of the newspaper article was slightly bigger:

Quel a été le point de départ de votre film ?

Pascal Arnold : C'est parti de quinze lignes dans un journal qui racontait le procès et les déclarations. L'absence de mobile à ce meurtre a motivé l'écriture du scénario.

Translation:

What was the starting point of your film?

Pascal Arnold: It stemmed from fifteen lines in a newspaper that recounted the trial and the statements. The absence of a motive for this murder motivated the writing of the script.

It's not much, but the real-life case may not have gotten much attention in France either.
