This movie would have been fine on its own... not great but ok.

i think that they just were hoping that it could ride on the coat tails but it's so different that it's not sequel worthy.

I agree this movie shouldn't have been a sequel, I haven't seen it yet, but I pefer the orginal with the orginal cast. I'm glad that Ne-Yo is in he movie, but it's just not the same as the 1st. I agree with TainaAzteca, for instance Dr. Dolittle 3 went straight to video and came on ABC family a few weeks after the advertising. Trust me Dr. Dolittle 3 wasn't that good, it didn't have Raven symone or Eddie Murphy, but the mother was in the movie.

The film was just plain terrible, MTV apart from the first save the last dance, should stick to Music videos, the main guy and girl was good, but the story, just downright disgusting. I hardly use that word, but this film just stunk.

i agree. i was surprised by this movie, it was pretty good for being a straight to video movie! i didn't even realize the first time i saw this that it was a continuation of the story. personally, i liked this movie better than the first. the first was so angsty, not enough dancing. it definitely would have benefited from being its own movie because people have different expectations for it. i think columbus's charm definitely made the movie worthwhile.

I say it was better as a sequel.
I picked this movie up in bali for less then a dollar and wouldn't have bothered beyond the fact I liked the first film. 6 months later I got around to watching it with low hopes, expecting to see a crappy sequel.

It was nice to already have her backstory established, though mildly annoying that they went over the mother details so many times, sometimes seeming unnecessary. It was great that the movie took a different direction.

The lead actress did the best job I've seen of acting like julia styles, but still making the character her own.

Personally, I wouldn't have seen this if it wasn't the sequel, I'm sure that lots of people who actually paid to buy it legally would be in the same boat.
Changing the actress, putting her in a different scenario and moving the story along with new challenges all helped make the movie work as a sequel, AND an independent film. It's actually a shame this was a strait to dvd release.

Julia Stiles is smart to not star in the sequels. This movie is awful.
