This movie was good but...

.. I don't think it was really worth a 7.7 rating... It was a great feel-good movie, but I think it was worth more of a 7.1 or 7.2.. Was the high score due to the fans of the book, or do people really think this was a very well made film?
Let me know what you think! :)

I gave it an 8 and I've never read the book.

I first saw it in the theater back in 2007 (without knowing it was based on a book) and gave it a 7/10 because - like you - I thought it was an enjoyable feel-good faerie-tale fantasy.

But something about it intrigued me enough to give it another spin on DVD, and after that I've just really grown to love it. It has a certain charm to it that grows on me over time. I actually went back and raised my rating to a 9/10.

Overall, especially for fans of fantasy/adventure films, this film is bloody spectacular, & deserves IMO at least an 8. It isn't perfect, & the endings are completely different (VERY glad they decided to continue w/ the whole "happy ever after" mode this story was obviously leading us to, instead of the lonely bittersweet ending of the book---I.e., in for a penny, in for a pound), but Hollywood just doesn't churn out much that's this clever, this well-cast, with such glorious effects these days. Used to be each Christmas & summer you could find ONE film at least that year that had these elements, to a degree, & while not always nearly as well-done in this film, a bit of fun & excitement that took us beyond the gritty real life stuff; that carried us away to a magical or futuristic place we could forget the everyday for a few hours. Lately, it seems, not so much. Just look at the films of 2012 & this trend is obvious. IMO, very few smart, thoughtful dreamers in charge of films these days. Mostly we get moronic gross-out (or just plain dumb) comedies set in everyday life, adventure/thrillers that are lacking wit, "wow" effects or stories, horror is ever a bore of fake blood, gore or possession, & chick flicks. sequels to things that didn't deserve to be original films in the first place, bad & unnecessary remakes, that's about it. Hunger Games about the only good adventure all year, & even that was totally dystopian.

I also gave it a nine, and it's on my list of movies that I'll watch an endless amount of times. I love the scenes where Claire Danes shines.

You really have to read the book. I enjoyed it just as much as the movie. I just wish that Ben Barnes had a bigger role!!! I love him.
