De Niro was god awful!

The older he gets the worse he acts. His accent was annoying and so was his stereotypical mouth. Can he ever change a character?

Agreed! Its always nice to see him taking on new kinds of roles and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance in this film.

I think sometimes they deliberately pick an actor based only on their background, and they want that bacground IN the movie. I think the captain was supposed to remind the audience of movies like Taxi Driver etc so that you're thinking of him as a deadly serious cutthroat pirate who would kill you just as likely as buy you an ale. Which is contrary to his real character.

I found this role to be somewhat of a throwback to DeNiro's role in Terry Gilliam's Brazil, where DeNiro plays a roguish character with an American accent, while nearly everyone else has British accents.

I love Terry Gilliam movies. Brazil, despite the unmistakable 80s look of the film, is excellent. It depicts a dystopian world that could, conceivably, come about. I very much recommend it!

Yeah, I would have preferred that he used someone else's mouth too.

You smoking something? DeNiro was awesome in this movie. One of the best parts of it. How can you not love his cross-dressing effeminate ruthless pirate character? He's got all the mannerisms down from voice inflection to the dainty wrist movements.

Have seen the movie only recently, and: You are right! DeNiro was obviously having a lot of fun playing that captain! Made me smile and laugh

I think he was really, really good in this movie. He obviously enjoyed the role and it showed in his acting. I didn't think for a second that he "phoned this one in".
