I agree, that was one hell of a thriller in the pure meaning of the term. Almost everything is well balance, the pace is adequate and kept equal all along the movie. And no misplaced one liner either, which is a bad Hollywood syndrome since the 90ies. Fortunately, my first language is French, so no problem with subtitles here. Clovis Cornillac, for those who know him, is again at his best. That guy is the Real McCoy when it comes to acting.

I liked it and I can find fault in Hollywood movies as much as the next guy. But I think you're heaping a bit too much praise on this. I did like it, though. I thought there were several things that kept it from being the pinnacle of all film making as you suggest, though.

The jumping from the police window onto the scaffolding seemed as bad as anything Hollywood could make up. The "revenge" plot seemed very over-complex and had too much room for error yet it seemed to flow without a hitch. Even events that were not planned by the bad guy seemed as though he planned for them to happen and he used them against the protagonist. the most obvious being the girl dying. There were other things, however, like the advice given by his lawyer that was used against him in court by his malicious wife. You could say it was just well planned out, but things like stealing the car in the middle of the night, which could NOT have been in the plans, seemed like a risky and strange thing to do. How could he know how the protagonist would react.

But I don't want to sound all negative. I enjoyed it. I agree that Hollywood productions and lack of originality and pndering to the LCD deserve some ire. I am all agitated myself about them throwing away 40 yrs of Star Trek for some explosions (and being heralded for it). But just because Hollywood seems intent on ruining good ideas lately, doesn't mean every other film is necessarily doing it all correctly all the time.

The frence seem to get it just right with these types of movies. Had enough twists and shocks to keep me glued. Pure entertainment and great acting. I gave it a 9.

I agree, Hollywood would have ruined this.

I gave it an 8. I sympathised with Plender and his plight until he brought others into it, merely because they were connected with Vincent (I'm saying nothing more as it will spoil the film for anyone who hasn't seen it). I'm glad I watched this a second time.
