"I Watch Harry Potter At My Dad's"

I love how the other kids look at each other like, "We can't talk to him anymore, he's evil and Satanic."

You can tell his mom was making him go to camp.

I love how the film played this. After corresponding with Levi's family on this, it seems like his family does not think Harry Potter is evil at all (they watch the movies), yet they showed Luke with a look as if that boy was satanic.

Apparently Becky also doesn't have the views on Harry Potter in general that she seems to have in the movie. According to Levi's dad she brought it up to warn kids about "real witchcraft". Don't know how much I buy that to be honest unless they cut an awful lot of what she said and meshed a bunch of jibber together.

I never understood the freak out with Harry Potter to be honest. I mean, do they really think that witchcraft is real? Do they think magic really came out of their wands? Maybe computers are the real magic.

That scene makes me crack up. She was having a normal (for her) lecture about behavior at church and behavior with friends and then..."While we're on the subject(???) HARRY POTTER IS AN ENEMY OF GOD".

I don't know if it's thinking witchcraft is real, like they believe you can turn a person into a frog or whatever, but that in practicing or supporting witchcraft, people aren't choosing to serve god.

It's sort of like sales of a product--me buying a Coke doesn't harm Pepsi--I'm not taking the price of a soda from them, but in giving my money to Coca-Cola, I'm not giving my money to Pepsi, and they'd prefer I did.

For Pastor Becky, it might be that focusing on non-Christian literature, the kids are investing time in the wrong thing.

Or she's batsh*t crazy.

You know what, I'm going to say "a bunch of jibber" for this one.

Well, at least dad doesn't make them READ Harry Potter!

What is this obsession some people have with Harry Potter? They are just stories, made up for entertainment.

I sincerely hope they don't believe witchcraft or demons or magic spells are real, observable phenomena because if so, they are clearly delusional. Why in the world fear something that does not and has never existed? Do they just love scaring themselves half to death?

I wonder what these folk must think of Tolkien's writing, or Lestat the Vampire or zombies for that matter. Do they spend their lives in fear of the non-existent?

Kinda like God?

Since you mention Tolkien , you can see a copy of the Lord of the Rings book on a table in one of the early scenes, about 15 minutes into the film, when Levi and a woman are trashing evolution and global warming. I wonder if they consider LOTR acceptable because Tolkien was a Christian?

This is not my signature. This is IMDb's automatic translation of my signature.

Why not, they worship the unproven.

True, but the worship is not even consistent. LotR magic is OK, but the magic in HP is evil ... inconsistency is the mark of an intellectually lazy person. You have beliefs, and however nonsensical they might be to others, they should at least be followed to logical conclusions and not end up a smorgasbord of bits of this and parts of that ...

I hope that people don't watch this film and think that it is representative of all Christians. While I don't believe in evolution I did not chose to home school my children. I also don't have enough evidence to believe in the "young earth" theory nor do I believe in the "flat earth" theory either. On the other hand, practicing witchcraft and sorcery is a sin. Now I would never have stopped my children from watching a Harry Potter movie. I have made it clear that to them though through the years that witchcraft is real and possible. The devil is real and so are his demons and when you use witchcraft you are calling on demons to help you. My problem with the Harry Potter movies is this, it makes it seem that using "magic" is an okay thing and that it is harmless. The same applies to shows like "Charmed" and "The Witches of Eastwick". If a person doesn't have God in his life he could view these movies and TV shows as a good thing but I believe no good thing can come from Satan. (oh and I loved LOTR which contain sorcerers) If you have the truth in your life, these things can't turn you from God. Also, every Christian isn't extreme as this church seems to be. If you want to watch, fine. As long as you know the Lord, you're not going to think that no matter how you sugarcoat sorcery it is still wrong.

reply

So in other words,it's OK and intellectually consistent to cherry pick whatever you want from your religion. Sorcerers from LOTR is fine, but magic in HP is not and so on ... there is nothing consistent in such a world view ...

Normally I was always taught in my Brainwashed-as-a-Catholic Days, you either take the religion whole and full as it is, dogma's and all, or you don't. No middle ground.

That might have been a bit of manipulative editing though (we can't tell from the scene if that's what made them react like that)

There are some fundamental christians who think this way. Jack Chick referenced Harry Potter as a problem in his tract "The Nervous Witch": http://www.chick.com/m/reading/tracts/readtract.asp?stk=5012

Before Harry Potter they also had a problem with the game Dungeons and Dragons as demonstrated by one of my favorite chick tracks "Dark Dungeons": https://www.chick.com/m/reading/tracts/readtract.asp?stk=0046

If you've never read a chick tract before...you're welcome!

reply

Maybe so, but we can't know for sure about this particular scene.
