The Worst Part...

... was when Ted Haggard burned that Levi kid and belittled him. What a condescending a'hole. Almost like he felt threatened by a 12 year old! Kid totally knew he was being insulted but too polite to say.

Think the camp is frightening but you have to feel for the kids.

I think the worst part was when they scared the kids with their abortion rant and put tape over their mouths. That was freaking crazy.

Counter offer, you take me nowhere and I talk to no one

That was creepy for sure. I haven't finished the program but the part that really bothered me so far was after being washed the kids were told to go off and find a place to pray. A lot of them were crying. It reminded me of a child being scolded and put in time out ("Think about what you did!").

reply

I think the worst part was when they made the kid who was smart enough to doubt the Bible think that he was going to burn in hell for all eternity.

reply

Old Ted was probably pretty high on meth and so busy suppressing his homosexuality that he got a little testy that day.

My heart just broke for these children too- it's hard to stomach watching this kind of child abuse and feeling so helpless from your couch.

The vitality of a cat.

The worst part was when they worshiped a card board cut out of Bush. I also thought the way they dressed up the kids in camo talking about going to war.

reply

The kid reacted like he got slapped in the face (which he was figuratively), but didn't say anything. I would have.

Since we're all sharing what we think the worst part is, here's my opinion:

I'm pretty pissed that so many kids are home schooled. Filling their heads with extreme religious ideals is bad but at least they can choose whether or not to believe it; or even change their beliefs when they get older. But what kind of future can these kids have with their parents giving them a half-assed education. Not to mention all the social skills they miss out on. I worry how they'll act when they enter normal society outside of their religious community.

You think I'm crazy? Perhaps we're all a little crazy. I know I am.

Well, a lot of them already view mainstream society as a wicked place filled with godless science/values/entertainment/etc. that will corrupt good Christians. So they'll most likely self-segregate and shun anything that isn't part of their insular religious subculture.

I mean, they're already inculcating these children with hostile attitudes towards mainstream society/culture (which is often referred to derisively and depicted as ignorant and immoral and anti-Christian) and filling them with paranoia about "the Devil" lurking around every corner trying to get them to sin and to ruin their lives. Likewise, they're being raised to see all sorts of imagined attacks on Christianity from the scientific community, from the media (including children's books), from public schools, from basically anyone that doesn't subscribe to their radical theology.

All of this is going to discourage them from integrating with society at large. These are the type of people who watch garbage Christian movies/TV, listen to garbage Christian music, read garbage conservative Christian books and are likely to socialize exclusively with their church group.
