Worked better if it wasn't a horror?

I'm a girl who LOVES her horror movies but the character arc of the two main characters halfway through was far more interesting than cheesy CGI, silly looking ghosts or rubber eels on a string.

I think this movie would have been better if they'd just been trapped and had to deal.

I agree that this would have been a lot better if it weren't for the supernatural elements, which I found kind of sloppy and uninteresting, and instead focused on the main characters' struggle for survival, which I enjoyed a lot more. I loved the beginning of this movie, largely because of the mountain setting, the lead performances, cinematography and score. I think it had the perfect set up for something great, especially with the creepy atmosphere, but I found the ghost elements cheesy, uninteresting and not scary, aside from the introduction of people walking by their car in the dark which was effective.

On the plus side, for a movie made in the mid-2000s I at least appreciate that it did not rely on cheap shock tactics and that is not a torture porn film or a remake of a Japanese horror film.

I couldn't agree more. The story development between the two main characters was far more interesting than the ghosts that came later. The acting was great, atmosphere was great, plus they worked very well together. The guy in particular did an awesome job. I do feel however it would have worked much better as a survival/tragic love story. But oh well.. even the way it is I like the film a whole lot. A very nice find!

they could have made it a survival/Drama without the supernatural stuff and it would still have been good.
