Frankly, I don't understand the relationship between the sheriff and the barmaid. I take it they were lovers years ago but what is the relationship between them now? Are they married? How did they come to be in the same "town" as each other considering it's out in the middle of nowhere? I found trying to sort out what they mean to each other a huge plot hole.

I believe the barmaid was the sheriff's wife... she mentioned taking off her wedding ring before sleeping with The Stranger when the sheriff asked her about it. It seemed that they had just grown apart because of his drinking.
