More movies like this

I wanted to watch a movie that will raise some intriguing questions regarding life, that will include amazing cinematography to serve my eyes and that will involve heart touching soundtrack. In short, I wanted to see a movie that will take me from my current stressful state to other realms. Some example of these kind of movies were Requiem for a dream, Spirited away, Eyes wide shut, Stalker, Mulholland dr, Wristcutters: a love story and many others that I would like to wrote down here but won't to make this short. Still I can't miss Big Fish, Scott Pilgrim, Interstate 60, Black Swan, Sweeney Todd, The Fall and Amelie :). I will stop here because this list started to look like a list of good movies in general. Still you should check them out.

I choose this movie and I think that I hit the jackpot concerning what I currently look for a movie. So my hope is that you can give me names of more movies like this, especially in the sense of mystical story, cinematography and soundtrack. Thanks in advance.

Similar movies to Mr Nobody might be The Fountain and Cloud Atlas. Both these movies were not really great in comparison to Mr Nobody (and I don't even recommend Cloud Atlas as I thought it was rubbish, The Fountain was not bad).

I could build a list of other amazing movies to take you out of reality... But that would take time. A couple off the top of my head:

- Moon
- A Man From Earth
- Sunshine

I'll add more as they come to me.

reply

Add The Butterfly Effect to the list of similar movies.

reply

You must be kidding ! Cloud Atlas is the most awesome film ever made , you must be out of your mind to called it a RUBBISH !

reply

I loved Cloud Atlas !

Very well said man ! now i'm sure will read the book.

reply

I've read the book and saw the movie about 5 times. The movie has some weak points, but so does the book, which was sometimes long-winding. Nevertheless I think both are masterpieces.

I really don't buy into the "the book was better than the movie" stance, I've heard that crap too many times before. Get this: a movie is not a book. Not everything translates well into a movie. Everybody visualizes a book differently, and then the movie doesn't match your imagination. A movie is just a couple of hours, a lot has to be left out. Furthermore, shooting a movie costs way more than publishing a book, so compromises have to be made to make it appeal to a wider audience. Taking that into consideration, I think Cloud Atlas the movie was groundbreaking and did justice to the book. Certainly in my top 5.

To be more OT: I found Mr Nobody a bit disappointing. While Cloud Atlas could mostly be possible and real, Mr Nobody was too dreamy and fantastic. Too far fetched for my taste. I was getting bored after 30 minutes.

- I <3 Huckabees
- The Adjustment Bureau
- Cloud Atlas
- The Fountain

reply

it's far from rubbish, it's actually good. Mr Nobody, The Fountain and Cloud Atlas all good films.

reply

Cloud Atlas was awesome (one of few I rated 10) but it has an entirely different message and is linear but shows different timelines.
The Fountain is very good too but way harder to get. May not be much enjoyable because of that. Its also linear with different timelines.

Two other flicks I know with different perspectives: Chung Hing sam lam (1994) and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).

Lola rennt (1998) is similar in showing different paths of the reality.

Whether theyre good or not you have to decide for your own.
My taste is obviously not yours. ^^

Lincoln Lee: I lost a partner.
Peter Bishop: I lost a universe!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!
I actually found this movie by looking at imdb's similar movie recomendations.

Maybe we're in an arabian fairytale.

reply

Pan's Labyrinth is similar in that it is a fantasy film that also has great cinematography I gave both a 10 but I enjoyed PL more than mr nobody

reply

It is also dissimilar in that PL >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mr. Nobody :)

Cloud Atlas (one of my favorite films of all time)
The Fountain
The Fall (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460791)
The Cell (another Tarsem Singh film, good, but not as good as The Fall)
Days of Heaven (most films from Terrence Malick will be visually stunning)
The Tree of Life (another Terrence Malick stunner, but the story may leave you scratching your head)
Three Colors: Blue, Three Colors: White, Three Colors: Red (3 films from from Krzysztof Kieslowski that are tied together—watch them in that order)
Upstream Color (very minimalist, very cool. If you like how this one messes with your head, see his other film, Primer, a temporal mind-fluck)
Quatsi Trilogy: Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, Naqoyqatsi (3 films from Godfrey Reggio. Totally visual. No conventional plots, expect no meanings or you're missing the point. Marlon Brando and Elton John are in the latter.)
Baraka (another totally visual masterpiece)
Sin City (getting back to more traditional plot lines, from the Frank Miller graphic novel, this single film contains 3 stories that are highly visualized, getting most CGI post-production treatment of live action film)
Sucker Punch (a good example of a film that is nowhere as deep as Mr. Nobody, but like Sin City, it has a highly visual treatment)
Wings of Desire

Cloud Atlas and The Fountain. The Fountain being one of my favourite films. Mr Nobody is great and I would put it on a par with Cloud Atlas. Didn't like Requiem for a Dream

“Blinding ignorance does mislead us. O! Wretched mortals, open your eyes!”

reply

You didn't like Requiem for a Dream bc you didn't understand it. That's my only explanation.

I'd throw in, "Upside Down"(2012). Not an overly great movie, but definitely worth a watch. That and Melancholia. Maybe I just have a thing for Kirsten Dunst lol but I don't think either of these movies have been mentioned yet.

"The only thing that comes to a sleeping man is dreams."

reply

Definitely Melancholia, and if you like that (but to a smaller degree), Another Earth. Bo'fem gonna be slow for some folk.

reply

Melancholia is amazing. And I have a thing for Lars von Trier. ;) But I'm not sure fans of Mr. Nobody would transition well to Lars' flick. It moves much more slowly. Mr. Nobody requires you to be alert and follow fast-paced, confusing details, while Melancholia can literally marinate your brain in one prolonged scene.

"Someone has to protect this family from the man who protects this family."

reply

I think you might be right. I loved Mr. Nobody but I really didn't care for Melancholia, although on paper it should have been my type of film.

reply

Requiem For a Dream is a very well made movie, but it's difficult to watch. Ellen Burstyn really deserved the best actress Oscar for that one. She was ROBBED!

reply

Thanks for the great list of movies to add to my netflix queue.

reply

most all of those except for the cell and the absolutely terrible sucker punch.

reply

I just watched Mr Nobody and LOVED it. Totally mind bending. Most of the movies you've mentioned I also loved and have in my DVD collection.

I might suggest "Synecdoche, New York" as another movie that's hard to get your mind around.

I also love movies like this.

Add to the list:
- Stalker

reply

Can you post a link to "Stalker"?
I see many with that title, and I'm not sure if you are referring to the Russian 1979 film or one of the other ones.

Thanks!

reply

My bad. Yes, the 1979 version. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/) It is not a visual feast like in Mr. Nobody and others that people are listing. It is mostly psychological and has a rich surreal feeling and mystery that puts it on this list.

Oh, and also add to the list:
-Pandorum (2009)
