Michael Bell, Kevin Kirkpatrick, Kevin Sherwood and Scott Allen Rinker.

Rating: Unrated (language and implied sexuality)
Price: $16.99
Release date: July 25

This independent film was created and is being self-distributed by
first-time producer/writer/director Chris Folino, who's a die-hard
gamer who works at videogame company THQ. Using a mockumentary approach
with Michael Bell as the narrator, this comedy follows the crowning
achievement in the lives of four Los Angeles gamers and one annoying
wannabe. Having played the pen-and-paper game, Demons, Nymphs and
Dragons for 23 straight years, the four players are about to break the
world record for gaming.

Set over the course of one day, the film uses numerous '80s flashbacks
(and a few '80s songs) to show the obsessive nature of the four gamers,
several of which still live with their parents in their 30s. Newcomer
Dave Hanson provides the most laughter as the pathetic Reese, a loser
who can't game to save his life. It's his annoying interactions with
the quartet of friends that set up the biggest laughs. Kevin
Kirkpatrick (Gordon), Kevin Sherwood (Kevin), Scott Rinker (Paul), and
Joe Nieves (Fernando) play the story's central gamers, and each holds
his own in the stories current day and flashback sequences.

Throughout the comedy, recognizable stars make cameo appearances.
Icons of the '80s like Kelly LeBrock (Weird Science) and William Katt
("The Greatest American Hero") have memorable scenes. John Heard
("Prison Break") and Beverly D'Angelo (Vacation) play Gordon's parents,
who happen to be swingers.

While pen-and-paper gaming is the central focus, the film's humor is
mainstream. The situations that the film presents are often funny and
sometimes hilarious. Anyone who grew up in the '80s will get many of
the references, and videogame and gaming fans will find this film
especially funny.

Selling Points

With a recognizable cast and a topic that isn't covered often, Gamers
should appeal to a wide range of consumers. This comedy is a blend of
Napoleon Dynamite and This Is Spinal Tap.

Gamers Review from Dreamwatch Magazine by Pat Jankiewicz

GAMERS: A meaner, funnier NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, GAMERS is the unsentimentalized story of several adult nerds who get together with their favorite role-playing game “Dwarves, Nymphs And Dragons”(D-N-D). As they have been playing it every week since they were in junior high school in the early 1980s, they are the target of a documentary chronicling the game where they break 75,000 hours of play.
Writer/director Christopher Folino clearly knows the world of Dungeons and Dragons and has a brutal knack for humiliating his characters in funny, inventive ways. His heroes are Wizards on Saturday nights and schmucks the rest of the week. Reese(Dave Hanson) is the most embarrassing of the group, as he mourns the death of Gwen, weeping and hanging pictures of her in his cubicle at work. Of course, “Gwen” isn’t a person—she was one of his D & D characters.
Gordon(Kevin Kirkpatrick) is almost as bad. A clueless virgin living at home, Gordon fails to notice that his parents(John Heard and a saucy Beverly D’Angelo—both of whom steal the film) are wild swingers, having three- and four-ways while their son and his friends roll dice in the garage. Heard even gets the funniest lines, sarcastically observing “We were quite proud that Gordo didn't waste all those hours studying to become a Doctor or a lawyer. We know if the world is ever attacked by evil little trolls, our son would save the day!”
Movie has many funny moments, such as William Katt as Reese’s clueless, sympathetic boss, trying to reach out to his hopeless nerd of an employee. GAMERS only drags with the Fernando character, whose personality and subplot seem to be an adult take-off on 'Fez' from THAT '70s SHOW.
