In ep 6 when Matt and Simon go to see some black guy's stand up, which is a disappointment and they hear Darius on stage.
I watched and rewatched Studio 60 dozens of times but it just wasn't funny. Why did they want him on staff?
Did I just not get the jokes?
I think the point was that the way his mind worked was what they were looking for. He wasn't getting laughs, but that's because he didn't know how to properly form his ideas into comedy, which was what Matt was going to teach him.
shareThe idea is that they get the jokes. Or they see how he's trying to construct certain jokes, and appreciate the craft, as well as the willingness to experiment. In a way the scene actually works better with us as audience not getting the jokes at all, because it shows the writers working on a different level.
