Great show but rosie too much?

spoilers below pertaining to Rosie.

Rosie has some sort of mental health issues that is not clearly defined but could possibly be split personality related. The character is lovable, funny though sometimes is laugh at, not with. Mental health is a touchy subject however the show has decided to go with it.

I recently rewatched a series two where it's revieled that Rosie may have been emotionally and sexually abused by an adult and knowing this fact the initial conversation by adult Rosie with Will at the cheese factory discussing keeping a secret, is actually an intense and uncomfortable scene.
I accept it's not a tv shows job to teach or explore fully however it all seemed a little rushed and thrusted on us in a not very sympathetic way. I have never had a mental illness such as Rosie does however I have had to deal with the latter subject and it hit me hard in the middle of a show I was really enjoying.
I know real life is hard hitting and there is no ratings advice in the day to day but I just didn't see it coming and I think the chance is explore this subject could have been done better dramatically or at least a realistic resolution past a foil hat and a fair day.

Love the show, great characters, great interactions and very funny.

Gretchen: You're weird.
Donnie: Sorry.
Gretchen: No, that was a compliment.
