Just watched the entire series...

...in one sitting!

I had read SO many negative comments about Jam and Jerusalem - and indeed, it was generally derided by critics - that I was not looking forward to it. My only reason for having a look was to remain loyal to Jennifer Saunders, who has written a substantial part of the best British comedy has to offer (and, unfortunately, some of the worst).

I LOVED IT. Even the pilot, which people seem to pan the most, was a wonderful surprise. People expecting a certain comic style will obviously be sorely disappointed. It's extremely subtle, Victoria-Wood-calibre real-world observation, punctuated by extraordinary moments of hilarious frivolity, and occasionally by rather sad and poignant flashes of pathos. These latter, of course, are what British comedy has always tended to excel at, and the mixture in this instance is just right.

I have eclectic tastes when it comes to comedy. I love everything: Will and Grace, One Foot in the Grave, Wonder Showzen, Curb Your Enthusiasm -- this selection highlights how open I am to different comedic styles. And now I have to add Jam and Jerusalem to that list. It's just so different from an awful lot of the crap the BBC has put out in the last few years (My Hero is where funny goes to die).

Can't wait for the second series to begin on New Year's Day! It's a shame that Joanna Lumley won't be reprising her role, but as long as Dawn French is still on top form, it shouldn't matter.

I believe Joanna Lumley will be back as Delilah - The Radio Times have her listed in the cast of Episode 1 (1/1/08) and Episode 2 (4/1/08) and make a reference to her character in the first episode.

I totally agree! I LOVED the show - I really don't understand why it's so underrated. It just shows that Jennifer Saunders can be as subtle a comic as obvious and shows her versatility into all comic genres

That sounded a little bit Sunday Times review, but in short, it is fantastic.

This is one of my all time favorite series. I can hardly wait until Series 2 is televised on BBC America.

I don't get BBC America but is it called Clatterford there? I saw "Clatterford - series 1" on Netflix and thought in passing of getting it but did not sound interesting. I appreciate the BBC logic that we might not "get" the jam (and "Jerusalem") allusions, which is true, but Jam and Jerusalem is a much better name, period. Once you watch something and like it the name is irrelevant but I was shocked to see an ad for Clatterford on a DVD that I immediately recognized as Jam and Jerusalem. The gentle humor is very pleasant, and the characters are flawed in a likeable way, but not bizarre. (Joanna Lumley's was the most bizarre, possibly contributed to her depature) Dawn French's split personality is odd but it becomes acceptable and endearing. It is comfy-plus; we all are or deal with people like these, though less dramatically so. High drama and low comedy should not be the only TV viewing available; variety is good. Reminds me of All Creatures Great and Small. There were rare hilarious moments but most was the same sort of gentle humor. Delightful.

According to http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a78729/lumley-will-not-return-to-jam-and-jerusalem.html , Lumley will not continue with her Delilah character beyond the first episode of series two.

Yeah, I noticed that Joanna has not been in any subsequent episodes.
I think (I may be wrong) that the scene of Delilah playing the organ in Series 2 Ep. 1 was reused from the first series - and we never saw her face when she was on her bike. It seems that she's hasn't done any filming for the second series

This is a lovely, heartfelt series and shows Jennifer Saunders' versatility as a writer. I love that it's told from the women's point of view and that it's so simple and charming. I think Dawn French steals every scene she's in and rightly so. She's never regarded as much as Jennifer Saunders and she's just as good.
I'm going to get the entire Vicar of Dibley and watch that all the way through next.

I love it too and have been watching the episodes on DVD for Season I over and over before I send them back to Netflix. I actually started on Episode 3 (disc 2) and didn't realize it and went back to Disc 1 and saw the first episode which compared to subsequent ones I can see the criticism but if you've seen them all and go back and you know the characters then it doesn't seem so bad. I love this subtle humor and the Saunders character who to me American eyes and ear is being very English (or is that British) just having these very proper but hilarious conversations in the background with her friend is an example of this excellent writing - I want to live there!

Have anyone noticed that the Sal character looks younger than in the pilot episode?

Anyone Season 2 is not yet on DVD and I can't wait. I hope it continues on for a few more years. They are lovely ladies who are very nice and supportive of each other in their own quirky ways. A sweet and gentile comedy that is so true to life. Sweet.

Series 2 is on youtube

I have to agree the series is excellent I did series 1 in 2 sittings I would have doen it in 1 but had to go out. I just love this series and don't believe it deserves the bad reviews it has recieved.

Have the reviews got better now we are in series 3 or is it still disliked by the critics?.

I think the problem with the critics is that they don't know what to make of J&J. They see that it comes from the pen of Jennifer Saunders and their brains automatically go to Absolutely Fabulous. They see that it features stars from the Royle Family, The Vicar of Dibley and Father Ted and what they're expecting is a standard 30 minute joke based sitcom.

J&J is not a standard 30 minute joke based sitcom. It's so much closer to being a comedy drama with a more whimsical feel and some pretty serious storylines. Perhaps, one day, critics will start reviwing television for what it is instead of what they think it should be.

I absolutely adore the show. I can't believe that there are only six episodes (which means next week the entire season has been aired). I hope there will be more.

money can`t buy you back the love that you had then - Feist "1 2 3 4"

I believe there are only two types of J&J viewers...those who LOVE it and those who don't get it. I feel so sorry for the latter group.
Caroline (Jennifer Saunders) and her malaprops are brilliant and so subtle. I'm sorry that there are only 3 seasons.
These ladies, and the Vicar!, have really gotten into my heart. This is what I dream about, living in a British village and having this kind of camaraderie.

I agree.
